What were people doing that was so rotten?

Was god just upset because people weren't worshipping him?

Isn't it a bit over the top to say Noah was the only nice guy left?

Surely there were a few others around worth saving.

Is the story really teaching people anything other than god being nasty & vindictive?

Genesis 6:5 states---
"And GOD saw that the wickedness of man [was] great in the earth, and [that] every imagination of the thoughts of his heart [was] only evil continually."
Imagine a world where everything going on was wicked, evil, corrupt---it had been around 1500 years since the Creation and the devil had done his best to thwart God's plan for mankind and led them astray to the point where everyone was wicked all the time exept Noah and his family. What a terrible world it must have been---no churches or organizations to help the needy, no kindness or love, no respect for others, who knows what else. We can only go by what the Bible says about the situation but it sounds pretty bad. So the only recourse he had to deny the devil his aims was to destroy everything except Noah and his family and a sample of all the land animals and birds to start fresh with which is what he did with the flood. Some people also speculate that verse 2 and 4 of chapter 6 referring to "Sons of God" meant angels --probably some fallen angels---and that they were having sexual relations with the "daughters of men" and creating a hybrid or genetically manipulated species and that's why there were "giants" in the earth that could possibly dominate the rest of mankind and corrupt what God had planned, so that's a reason for him wiping out these hybrid people....interesting theory. He could have just wiped them out some other way but some people also think that the flood was necessary for our modern culture to become what it is since there would not be any fossil fuel in the ground like coal or oil without the flood having put them there for us to develop and use. What would we run our modern cars and factories on if fossil fuel was not so abundant and cheap? Would the world even have developed to the point we are at now without them?
The Flood story demonstrates how God can and will punish wickedness and corruption and save the righteous by his power.

If you'll read the account you will see that the demons had come down from heaven and were raping the women. And just as in Lot's day they were having sex with men as well. The land was full of violence. (Genesis 6:5, 11,12) - “every inclination of the thoughts of [man’s] heart was only bad all the time” and the earth became “ruined, because all flesh had ruined its way on the earth.” The offspring of the demons and women were called Neph-lim. They were giants and were killers. Noah spent 40-50 years telling these violent people that God was going to bring a flood, but none of them listened to Noah, until it was too late. Noah and his sons were the only righteous ones that God could find in the world.

And like that time, there is again violence and depravity in the world, and God has told us that he would bring an end to it. Only a few people in the earth are preaching to others and giving them the warning, and again no one is listening.

Well you, me and some others here know that the story is bull but it is just another scare tactic. It ''teaches'' that ''god'' is to be feared. It also teaches how ''god'' feels about the value of a human life... if it were true.

Nah... it was just a side effect from him spending a bit too much time on God's "throne". Even a heavenly throne can only take so much of a load at one time.

Yeah, apparently all the babies and little kids and puppies and other animals were too evil to save, too.
