lab's are great dogs... they are known to be great with children and very trainable...

I grew up with labs and love them to death. They are the most trainable, loving, easy going dog there is. They love kids and other animals. I recently had to put down my black lab "Rocky," and am currently training "Buddy" a 6 mo. yellow lab male. Rocky won best of breed at the California Nationals when he was just 9 mo's old. Buddy has picked up all the obedience commands sooo fast and LOVES to do tricks. Labs are VERY smart and pick up things easily so you can begin training them at a very young age. By the time my labs were 12 weeks they already knew "sit, down, stay (mostly:), come, off, and heal." People think that labs are super hyper dogs which is totally not true. They just need lots of exercise and activities to stay balanced. They usually love water, so they are great dogs to take to the beach or lake and were bred to dive into frigid water so they are great in the snow as well. They are great with other animals and kids. They are an active, well balanced breed.

The answer to your question would be the same as with any breed, it all depends. Labs are a wonderful breed, they are cute, friendly, smart, etc, but just like with any breed they have to be properly raised, trained and socialized and even if all of that is done and done properly it still depends on the individual dog. I have owned a chocolate lab and a black lab and they were wonderful! They were both properly raised, trained and socialized, but I have to say neither of them really did well with children or strangers. Again, they were both well trained and socialized and they were wonderful dogs.. I mean they were never really mean to anyone, but they just never really took to any children or anyone that didn't live in the house. Also, I got attacked by a yellow lab and my neighbors had a yellow lab (not the same one that attacked me) that attacked 5 people.. all of which were under 12 or so years old and one of which was my little brother. Now, on the other hand, right now we own two American Pit Bull Terriers that have both been properly raised, trained and socialized and they have never met anyone or anything that they didn't love! lol! Like I said, it all depends on the individual dog as well as, how well the dog has been raised trained and socialized. Labs are a wonderful breed, but they have to be well bred and properly raised, trained and socialized, just like with any breed.

A lab is a great dog It's very faithful and smart. You have to spend a lot of time with it because (being smart) it gets bored easily. Do you have a stream or pond nearby? They love water.

Make sure that you have a healthy one - puppy mills are cranking out labs with future hip problems

Make sure you take it to an obedience class early on. Both you and the dog will learn a lot and avoid future control problems.

There are two distinct subcategories of Labradors - the Field lab and the English lab. The field labs are long and lean with high energy levels for hunting, field trials, etc. The English labs (I currently have two) are broader, with "boxy" heads and are, for the most part, laid back. The labs you see at dog shows are typically English labs. It sounds like you are looking to adopt a specific dog from the details you gave. Unfortunately, it is hard to lump all labs into one personality. While my first instinct is to jump up and shout "YES! Labs are GREAT! Adopt this dog right now!", I encourage you to spend some time with your prospective dog and decide if his/her personality and energy level is right for you. Good luck!

Black labs are great dogs,BUT they are high maintenance. They need a lot of exercise or they will misbehave to use up their extra energy. Think about the amount t of time you have to spend walking and playing with a dog. If you don't have lots of time get a calmer type dog.

Well it all depends on how you classify a "good" dog. Labs are very smart and loyal. They will protect you and stick by you until the day that you or they die. But depending on how you train your dog, you can end up with one that is spoiled rotten. Other than that type of dog is wonderful very cheerful and loving. Great temperment.

I LOVE my lab! He's awesome. Labs are very sweet loving dogs. Just remember - Labs are very high-energy and require lots of exercise. If you're an active, outdoorsy person then a lab is a great dog for you.

labs are great dogs, but very hyper in their first 3-5 years. Remember, if you don't kill them in the first 3 years, they make the best pets!

Smart dogs (and labs are smart) can get into lots of trouble if they get bored, so have lots for them to do.

Black labs are great dogs! They're affectionate and they're very good with children. I've had 2 black labs and they both lived to a ripe old age and brought much joy to their owners.
