I hate the be the one to tell you this, but you've got a way to go! A female dogs average heat cycle is about a month. Beyond that, she may give off pheromones that still attract male dogs for another few weeks. You don't need to keep her outside. In fact, if you don't want her to possible get pregnant you should keep her inside! To help deal with the mess, go to your local pet shop where they sell little doggy panties that you can put panty liners in. Don't bother buying the special dog panty liners. They're the same as the ones people use that you can get at the drugstore for much cheaper. Just make sure to take off the panties before she goes out to go potty of she'll pee in her pants! (It really helps to have 2 pair of these pants--trust me!)
Basically, there are 3 stages a female dog goes through regarding her heat cycle:
There are 3 stages that I'll give you average lengths for....
1. Proestrus--early on in the heat cycle when the female is starting heat (but she won't let males breed with her). This lasts about 8-10 days.
2. Estrus--the stage during the heat cycle when the female will allow males to mate with her. This also lasts about 8-10 days.
3. Diestrus--this is when the female is no longer receptive to being bred with a male and is going out of estrus. Still, do not leave her unattended with intact males at this time (they'll still be all over her!).
Females will go in to heat (after their first cycle) about once every 7-12 months.
If she is not an AKC registered dog, and you are not planning on showing her to get her championship and breeding her, you should get her spayed after this heat cycle is over. It will be less mess and inconvenience for you and less uncomfortable and hassle for her. Discuss this with you vet.
Good luck.

She will be in her heat cycle for approximately 21 days. The first 7 or so is when you will see active bleeding - once that tapers off is when you REALLY don't want to keep her outside for any time other than her pottying - and you should be standing outside with her. Male dogs will get very determined during the second 7 days or so, and she will be very cooperative - opening gates for them, boosting them over the fence to get to her, etc (joking).....but seriously, the mess will stop in a few days, but after that is when she is ready, willing, and able to get pregnant. Keep her close to you and in the house for at least the next 10-12 days.

Keeping her outside might get you more than you bargained for. Males can be very creative when it comes to...hmmmm,,,'dating'. I've known litters concieved through crate wires. To keep the house clean while she is in estrus, you can put a pair of boy's undies on her upside down so her tail sticks out the fly.
She will have fresh blood for around 2 weeks, then will have a clearer discharge, Don't be fooled! That is their prime conception time and they will be most willing to breed then. Keep her in sight until the swelling goes completely from her vulva. (Female parts) Then get an appointment with the vet to get her spayed. Good luck.

My golden was in heat for 3 weeks. You can buys "pads" at pet smart. Although my dog wouldn't keep them on, as soon as I turned my back she chewed them off. Also, we bred my dog so she was pregnant. I don't know if this would maybe make her heat longer or shorter or have no effect.
