It depends on what you are looking for. I personally am a big fan of the macaw. They are beautiful, I'm not saying that African Grey's are not, smart, interactive, can be great talkers, and have a lot of PERSONALITY. They can be noisy, its true, however all birds can be noisy. They need a bigger cage. They can be very demanding of your time. They tend to be very mischievous but very funny.

Macaws are prettier and more showy, but African greys will love you. Macaws may be biters, and African Greys will bite people that they don't know. The grey is very much a one person or one family bird. The macaw will probably be more expensive to feed and cage. If you want color and the 'Awwww' effect get a Macaw. If you want an affectionate companion get a Grey. Be careful with both around strangers.

A friend just gave me his macaw, he moved out of state. I am her 3 owner and she is 11 years old, just a baby still. And there are days that she does not scream at all, many in fact. She is a blue and gold macaw, she is beautiful too. She is smart, takes orders or commands just like a dog does. If I tell her to sit on a certain perch, she does it. This is a major decision, for life, choose wisely. Also, I have a total of 3 parrots, my oldest is 16 years and I have had him since he was a year old. I love them all dearly.

I think the Macaw is the much better choice. The macaw's ability to adapt to new situations is much easier to deal with then the very fear prone african grey parrot. I run a website where we see all sorts of customers come to us with their bird's problems and African Grey parrot's are the second most common bird that we see with massive behavior problems... second to the cockatoo of course.

Hope that helps,

Greys are known for their talking ability, but keep in mind that not all Greys will talk! Is that OK with you? They are not screamers, either, which is nice. If hand raised and handled correctly, they are wonderful.
Macaws are beautiful, but need even bigger cages than Greys. They are very loud screamers, which is part of owning one--you can't get angry at them when they do this!

the Grey is quieter and can learn more words then the macaws but they need to be tamed at a very young age or you cannot hold them.
i have had both and know from experience.
good luck and by the way they can live to be 60 yrs old.

They are both majestic creatures.. But for flash and intellegence I say the Eclectus.. The males are green with red and black under thier wings and blue on the top of thier wings and black underside with a yellow strip on thier tails thier beak looks like candy corn...The females are red with either a blue or purple breast orange to red colored tail feathers and black beaks.. They can talk just as well as the greys and they are not prone to biting.. Very gentle and they flock as a whole to the family.. they don't just prefer one person of coarse they do have thier favorite person in thier human flock but they love all the members of thier flock..They are very noisey they flock call in the morning and in the evening the rest of the day they talk and sing and mimic things.. Mine likes to mumble under his breath it is hysterical its like he is mad and is voicing his opinion just quietly.. Please remeber that most birds live a very long life and in most cases will outlive you.. You need to aquire an Avian vet and make sure you have a decent cage and toys for the parrot.. Food isn't just seeds either they need fruits veggies pasta rice beans and leafy greens as well as a good pelleted diet.. Good luck
