For 3 days now I have been repeating the same word a lot to him while he is on my finger(I know 3 days is not a lot and 2 weeks is the normal period) and today he seemed to respond to it a bit anyway any other better tips to teach him to say joey his name. No record it and play it a lot that can kill them or cause a lot of stress.

Thanks in advance.

Why would I go out and buy a whole new bird just so I could have a pet that talks?

it takes a lot of patiance to teach a bird to speak the best speaking birds are african greys but since u have a budgie i will tell u about them. the record for the most sentances for a budgie to say is 500! if ur budgie is tame and sits on ur finger then he is attatched to his owner and it should be easyier for u to train him how 2 talk. i had a cocatail and as it got tamer evrytime i sed hello it whiseled and sounded like it was saying hello in a whisle tune then i sed it a cople of times a day (evrytime i saw him) and made sure my mouth was always in his direction so he could see it moving. then he started mimicking my mouth movments and learning fast. also, a friend of mine who keeps birds, has them in a shed and leaves the radio on for them to lisen to and all the birds that were in that shed can now talk!

I've always had a parakeet except when I was in the USAF. I've found that some are natural at it and some won't ever talk no matter how hard you try. The best parakeet is the ones that don't sing out very loud or very much but tend to squawk all the time. That low squawk they make when playing with toys. Those are the best talkers. Apply all the recommended techniques to these types of birds and you'll have a talker that you can't shut up.

We had a boy budgie which talked a lot (and they say women never stop!).
Did it just the way you are - recording isn't any good because you want him to respond to you. A good time is when you are giving him a treat or filling up his food dish, then he'll associate "talking" with good times.
Have you seen the budgies in the Loro Park in Tenerife? They are great - ride mini bicycles and two will use a budgie-size sea-saw. They are little birds who seem to have a great sense of fun.

I used to have a budgie called joey he didnt talk at all for about a year but that didnt bother me,i still carried on saying cheeky boy, joey etc and eventually he did it then once he started he used to talk all the time, its just gonna be a case of persistance i think and he'll get there eventually, out of all my 6 budgies though there has only been him thats talked so i guess it all will depend on his personality etc.
good luck

You can clicker train it --not hard at all email me if you need details

The easiest way to train a bird of any kind to talk is to put it on your finger or your arm if it is larger and hold it so that its eyes are level to your nose, and say the word to it over and over for about 5-10 minutes a day, it should learn the word in a week or two

When i was a kid we had the coolest budgie ever. It used to talk all the time it used to say da da da da batman. I think if you can get it onto your finger you are stepping in the right direction as you are establishing a good relationship with him. You just need keep talking to him as you already are. I know this sounds funny but our budgie was really clingy to my dad (and i mean he adored him) my dad used to chirp to him like budgies do and he used to fly ono my dads shoulder and talk to him.

My budgies don't talk but my conure does and I taught him by just reapeating phrases, sounds and words. Also playing tapes and c.d s can help. My conure learnt Merry Christmas but listening to xmas songs on the radio and now says it at the most inapropriate times. He also says please as i think his learnt if you say please you get something. Just keep trying and if he makes a noise reward him. Your lucky he will sit on your finger my budgies act as if its a threat if I put the hand in the cage let alone try to get one on my finger!

I have a male budgie and he can say alot of things, keep doing what you are doing, and even when you are just walking by the cage say it. If he does say it, praise him, like good girl. Is your bird young? ours was and they say males are the better talkers. Be patient, because it is so worth it, ours says tons of things like, "I love you", " I missed you", "I'm a puppy woof", "Come give kisses" etc. Good luck!

Budgies are not the easiest birds to get talking. They'll only do the odd word, if you're lucky. Get yourself a Mina bird or an African grey.

~ does (my name here) have a rat?
~ does (my name here) have a snake?
~ hes a cheeeeeeeeeeeky boy... he is you know.
~ come on and speak nicely, nice little boys don't chirp.

this is just a short list of what my grandmothers budgie can say. "baby" is 6 years old now, and still learning new words every day. he says more than this, this is just what i can think of at this moment in time. the tip i have... just spend time with the animal, one on one time, with no background noise. dont try talking to the bird with the Tv on, or the radio, in the background. the noise will confuse the bird as he is trying to listen to you. one on one time in a quiet environment. and spending just as much time with i'm / her as you can. is your budgie definatly a male? he has the blue cere above his beak? its mainly patience. just hold out, the first word is always the hardest, after that, you cant shut them up :)
