It may differ, depending where you live.
You sign the ownership over to them.
They go to the registry office.
They buy the new plates or temporary one.
They come back, put tags on car & drive off.
Or you could arrange to meet them there.
Then you have the problem of getting home.

They won't need to get one to drive it home as long as they have the title with them. Most states will accept that until they get a tag. Not that they can drive around like that forever or anything, but as a way to get the car to their residence

All they have to do is take the signed notorized title to the dmv and they will give the new owners temporary tags.

You must go with them to the local BMV and have your signature notarized on the title. Then they can get a temp. tag. that way you are under no liability since it is in their computer with the new owners name. this is how it is in Ohio check your state for their rules.

they need the title to register it to get the tags, and they will need to get insurance on it. so technically, the sale of the car will have to be all done and complete before they actually get the car. which could be risky. just have them mail the plates back to you.
