And then have my unlicensed parent/guardian insure it?

The thing is, I live with my grandmother who is too old to drive, and I have a license, and I'm trying to figure out how I could buy the car and who can get its insurance.

Also what if an aunt or uncle living at another address buys the car for me, and they insure it, and I just drive it?

My grandmother could sign anything she needs to for me because she wants to buy me a car, but she just doesn't have a driver's license.

You can buy the car and get insurance by yourself as long as your guardian signs the application for insurance.

Most states require you to be 18 or older to legally own and sign for ownership. This means that you cannot own it.

If your grandmother owned it, she can get it insured with you as the driver. Insurance costs could be high as you would be the only driver.

It makes little to no difference if the owner is your uncle or grandmother. However, if you were driving, had an accident and was considered at fault (which is often the case at your age), the owner as well as you can be liable.

You must be 18 to have a legal binding document of sale. As for someone else insuring it and you drive it, that is insurance fraud and if you get into an accident more likely than not, they will not cover you, your passengers, the car and the car that was in the accident with you.

But if you feel that you are mature enough, get someone to buy the car that is in your family from a reputable dealer, then gift it to you. Then you put the title in your name and get insurance yourself.

I think it depends on what state you live in.

In Illinois--You are entitled to get insurance if you have a driver's license, however, it will be very expensive....like 400 for 6 months and liability only. (had insurance since I was 17!)

Call State Farm and ask them, I'm not an expert.

You have to be of legal age to sign contracts. At a reputable car dealer, you have to sign a contract. And even if you take the risk of buying from an idividual, there are still "papers" to sign to register the title transfer and obtain insurance.

So, I guess, without the help of your parents/guardian, there is no way you could buy a car that you hope to safely (economically speaking) use.
