Should people believe purely based on that wager?

No, I don't think people should believe based on that, and I don't think it's a good argument. I used it once, about five years ago, even before I was a Christian (which I've only been for eight months, though I "believed" in it, or at least WANTED to believe in it for the last two years)...and haven't *intentionally* used it since.

I try to avoid it, if I can.

Its a fatuous argument.

It could equally apply to any fictional being. I could make one up right now and you would have to believe based on the wager. Then I could make up another. And another. And another.
