So far the above answers are recommending suburbia, and if that's what you want, go for it.
If you want to be in town, though, the northeast quadrant of Atlanta city, inside perimeter I-285, and north of I-20 has a young vibe. NW Atlanta is wealthy and pretty.
If I were to move back to ATL, I'd want to be near East Ponce de Leon between Peachtree Street and Dekalb County line.
Decatur is nice, in my opinion, but I'm sure it has its 'hoods.

You could live in south fulton (college park, fairburn, palmetto, union city) They have some decent homes and apartments. I live in Riverdale and that area has become bad and crime-ridden. If not then you could move to Grant Park area which has been redone and crime has decreased there. It really depends on what you are looking for exactly; house, apartment. Buckhead, Roswell, Alpharetta, and other places in north fulton are pretty expensive. Gwinnett county has a lot of traffic and is heavily populated by hispanics. Cobb County isnt too bad. East Atlanta has some areas that are good and others that aren't.

Stay out of DeKalb County (ghetto) and College Park (under the flight path of ATL airport). I used to live in Lithonia (part of DeKalb) and I was lucky that my neighbors were great people, but that is an anomaly in DeKalb.
Where you should live really depends on where you will be working because commuting in and around Atlanta is ridiculous. I commute in Los Angeles, and Atlanta is just as bad if not worse in some areas.
I also lived in Conyers, around Covington and the houses were affordable to rent and still not too far in terms of commuting.

I would recommend the Vinigs area of Smyrna. Traffic wont be too bad, and its a nice trendy area to downtown. Lots of new apartments, and close to Home Depot home office.
