I have a halo around my head because I am an angel. It looks like a sparkling ring around angel's heads. they are pretty. I know some mortals that deserve one--but generally angels just have them.

Started with the halo around the moon.
The moon goddess Selene had a halo.
Contemporary halos are a miss interpretation of the Greek Orthodox paintings of Jesus in front of the sun.
Jesus eclipsing the sun god is the representation of the sign General Constantine received when he prayed to the sun god for a sign, the sign was from Jesus and Constantine became the first Christian Emperor.
The complete history of the halo is to long to wrrite here.

it is the light energy emanating from God. A person who is God conscious will have a pure halo shining because they are in constant contact with God. Evey one has God situated within their hearts, but due to being covered by the illusory energy (Maya) they can not see or realize that God is with them always within their hearts and within all living beings and in every atom. He is Omnipotent and omnipresent. But one who is conscious of Him is enlightened and will have a halo. Most will not be able to see the halo unless they have at least come to the impersonal realization of God and those who have realized the Absolute truth. A halo is what some would call an aura. It is really not a gold ring hovering over one's head.
I have heard tales of people having such a glow, particularly as they were dying.

no such thing
it originates from Egyptian culture
of a sun around a "god's'' head
and then some of the painters
decided to put it on the saint's
heads' and Jesus to make them look ''holy''
so it all originates from pagan culture...
or if your talking about the game Halo...
well that's another story...
