I believe in God, but I think people do that "just in case". It's their last hope...their last cry for help.

A. because it makes the religious folk so mad.
B. because it is force of habit.
C. because you want to cover all your bases.
I don't believe in god, I believe in science. But, hey I could be wrong. I don't think I am, but I am not stupid enough to say that I know everything. In times of stress people like me may call upon God because they are grasping at straws looking for anyway out.
You should watch the TNT series Saving Grace that will start soon. It starts when a woman, who doesn't have a strong belief in God, has a traffic accident. She kills a man and cries "Oh, God." Only this time God answers. The story is a fantasy, but it will address your question.

God is a noun, a person place or thing. In this case, it's a thing. God is generally replaced with swear words and the like in the very same "Oh God!" phrase you quoted. They're not praying, they're swearing. It's not faith that make them say that, it's fear. Fear of God's existance and the possibility that you're wrong that he in fact doesn't exist. I'm not sure if you've noticed this, but people on death row aren't the smartest of sorts on the earth today. Just because i say jesus christ when i get mad doesn't mean i believe that he exists. It's slang, nothing more.

Strange, I've never done that. I don't get sick at least not in the past 15 years. I've never had a last resort. I've never been on my way to prison. In fact in those situations I don't see myself turning to an imaginary being in hopes it has some answers for me. You make a terrible mistake in thinking that this is something I do, when I've never been in such situations.

Oh, I believe in god, but never call on him/her when I am in trouble or for any other favors. I am responsible for my mistakes, not god. As my parents use to tell me, "You got yourself in trouble. Now get yourself out." I do not for a moment think god is a santa clause, like old man sitting on a cloud waiting to shower me with gifts every time I ask for something. To me that is the height of childishness. And if something I do not like happens in my life and is beyond my control I never ask god to take it away. I ask for the wisdom to understand why it is happening. That is all I ever ask of the Divine Father/Mother.

I do???
That's news to me.
But then again I've never been at deaths door or on my way to prison. Perhaps that is a common thing for God-believers.

Well they're probably not calling on the christian idea of God because that god lets all types of travesties happen every second, so why the hell should he care?
When people are panicking, scared and desperate they will call on absolutlely anything, there is no rational thinking behind it.

Wow! Do you know me? Have you heard me call on God when I get into trouble? Have you been spying on me? How many people have you personally known who did this? And you ask why? You don't really want to know...you are just trying to prove some kind of lame point, aren't you?

Well I don't call out to your God or any Gods for that matter so why don't you just speak for yourself. If I use the word "god" in a sentence, it is mostly out of habit.
