he did not. That is to say, there is no historical evidence of him doing so. In 1517 he published his 95 theses and distributed them among friends and colleagues. In all likelyhood the nailing to the door is just a legend.

edit: okay, it seems in 1546 Melanchton (a close associate of Luther) wrote that it had happened. So I guess it would be reasonable to believe it did happen.
