he told others that we were not compatible. Yet I text messaged him and he replied back. He has never told me that he thinks we are not compatible. Why would he do that?

did you text him a personal message, like do you love me or someting similar? If it were a nonpersonal text, of course he would reply out of common courtesy. If he is very loving to you, you don't need to worry. Does he act distant towards you? You should have a "gut' feeling about how he feels about you. do YOU think you two are incompatible?
