My 10-yr old springer spaniel just started digging/chewing at the carpet yesterday in my rented house. It's right along an edge where it meets a tile floor and it very noticeable. Obviously, this isn't a good thing. Any suggestions how to stop this behavior? He did this once before, in another rental about 3 years ago. He stopped when we moved. I'm not going to be moving again anytime soon, I don't want to have to recarpet someone else's house. It happens during the day when everyone is at work. Thanks!

From your dog's point of view his whole world has changed! Imagine the stress of being 70 years old and suddenly you have to live somewhere new.. and it smells different, other animals may have lived there etc... so he's off kilter and now his beloved owner leaves him ALONE. Spend more time doing things with him.. lots of exercise (within reason for an older dog).. give him things to do while you are gone.. a big juicy bone, a treat filled kong, a toy that distributes cookies when its rolled. Spray the carpet down with bitter apple or another repellant, I've heard vinegar can help. Leave him home for short periods of time.. so you are not always leaving him for a long length of time.

Good Luck!

My beagle did this too! Funny enough when he was 11. It seemed to be out of bordom or something! I too was in a rental (apartment) and he actually dug at the carpet and went into my bottom pantry shelf and ate some of the wood! You could try a spray at Petsmart, it's bitter flavor and smells awful to the dog. You could try spraying that on the floor (check to see if it is carpet-safe) and maybe the smell and/or taste may throw him off. My beagle typically dug at the floor because he was trying to fill a dog-instinct need to dig. The other time he started to do that was during a thunderstorm--did your dog hear a storm outside or loud noise-that may have set him off too. He could have a bone or toy he's trying to 'bury' into the carpet too-that might be it also. Finally, it could just be out of bordom if you're gone for more than 4-5 hours. Other than that, I'm not sure exactly how to stop it, but if it helps, around my dog's 12th bday, he stopped alltogether! Good luck!

I had a can of housebreak training spray from the vet and every thing he could pe on I would spray...There are some things to spray for ridding your dog from chewing and it gives a foul taste to him but it won't harm him...Check with a dog training program or with the pet store...You can break him in yourself and it wont cost you an arm or a leg... I also hear that leaving a tape on with your voice to play like you are at home will shock the mess out of him...He will not see you but will note l am unsure if you can put it on a timer so you will need to record and edit out his barks...if possible the recorder will have to be like a day you spent at home with the dog... or a conversation of you talking on the phone...that you do not mind being heard again ... or the TV show ...you just love to watch this may help God Bless

A dog should be trained on how to eat, walk with you, not to bark, potty training and sleep on its place etc. You can teach anything to your puppy, dogs get trained easily with some good instructions. If you want some good training tips visit https://tr.im/OlhCJ

If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.

It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances.

Tear out all of the carpet, and get the dog a whole bunch of toys.

It's most likely seperation anxiety. Try getting a dog sitter.

"You have to accept some responsibility for your situation..." You decided to own a pet while living in a rented house so you have to deal with it. Either train your dog or don't own animals at all.

the dog is doing that in rebellion, because no one is there to show affection to him when he wants it.

Each time he does that , roll up some news paper and whack him with it and tell him he was bad. Or get rid of the dog.
