It takes soft white sticky bacterial plaque 12 hours to harden into crusty tartar.

Crusty tartar cannot be removed by brushing-- Only a dentist or hygienist can scrape it off for you.

If you have tartar on your teeth, you are at risk for getting caries and gum disease, because that stuff just sits on your teeth and attack your enamel and gums all day.

Prevention is all about getting rid of the plaque before it has a chance to turn into crusty tartar. That means brushing thoroughly before bed and after each meal.

I know this is an old question, but incase anyone searches a similar question, I wanted to share my experience. I did an experiment a couple years ago and did not brush my teeth for just over 1 year. January 2011-February 2012. I did not get any cavities. I have actually never had any cavities in my life. I ate pretty much anything during this 1 year experiment including fast food and drank nothing but soda. My teeth did not even get yellow or darken in color in any way. They have always been kind of an off-white color naturally. Breath was fine, and it usually smelled and tasted fine (tasted like Coca-Cola usually). The only problem I noticed was a little bit of tartar on the bottom of the front 2 middle bottom teeth. It came right off when I scraped it with my finger nail and brushed after the 13 months were over. So...obviously tartar does come off. You don't need a dentist. I went to the dentist for the first time in about 30 years about a year ago (about 1 year after my experiment). The dental hygienist said my teeth looked good. I had no cavities. No gum disease. No problems at all. Not even a receding gum line which I read online will definitely happen. Well, it did not. So...just wanted to share that with you. I'm telling you or anyone that you should stop brushing your teeth. I'm just saying I went over a year with no brushing and still did not get a cavity.

Many people prescribe to the theory that tooth brushing as a cavity prevention measure was created by the tooth brush/ tooth paste industry in order to keep you spending money. But you can't ignore the fact that brushing your teeth keeps your breath fresh, which is something you should do as a courtesy to your friends and coworkers.

It depends on the person and their diet how fast your teeth will rot. It only takes 2 mins to brush so just brush them!!!
(Oh and in the stone age their diet was made of hard foods cause there was no proccessed crap therefore their teeth got ground down. This means the places we usually get fillings didnt exist back then!!!)

It depends upon the person, genetics and diet. My brother went 20 years without brushing and he did not have any cavities. He also drank a quart of milk per day.

If you include halitosis gravis it is a very short time. Don't breath in my face in the morning.
