how do i go about this. I tried using partitionmagic 8.0 trial to repartition my harddrive. I used the trial because i don't have money to spend on software and it didn't work. So what free software can i use to repartition my harddrive. what version of Linux do you recommend, and how do i install it on the new partition.

Not sure why the trial version of partition magic didn't work.

Maybe try borrowing or downloading a full version of it (it doesn't necessarily need to be the newest version).

Otherwise, your only choice is to back up all of your stuff, wipe out the drive, set up a boot partition, a windows partition, and a linux partition. Then reload all of your stuff.

You don't need PartitionMagic. Ubuntu is the easiest distro for those new to Linux. Just download the LiveCD and burn it (as an image) to a CD. Boot to the CD and during the install process you'll be given the option to resize your existing Windows partition. It'll automatically create the Linux partitions for you and continue with the install. It's very easy, just follow the onscreen prompts. It'll setup up a bootloader for you so that you can choose which operating system to boot to at startup. Read this guide here for setting up the "Perfect Ubuntu Desktop". It has screenshots and an installation guide.

You might want to try Wubi. It is an Ubuntu Linux install that doesn't require any partitioning. http://www.wubi-installer.org
