it all depends on what is wrong. if the compressor locked up , the system will have to be flushed out, and a new dryer and expansion valve installed this could be an 800-900 dollar repair[labor inclusive] and consider converting to r134a at this time.
if you live in an area where a/c is nice but not necessary, you can trim off the timing tab from the plastic timing belt cover and install a longer belt to run the power steering. [a steak knife works] an"new " plastic cover is cheap at the salvage yard, if you later want to fix properly.
if just a leaking hose these can be made up with locally supplied hose and fittings and a shell crimping device [to fasten fittings into the hose ends] hose clamps always leak the shells never do.
i have never seen a 2 evaporator fail or even a condenser [that wasn't involved in an accident but more info would be nice.
note if it is just throwing the drive belt the rubber mounting bushings for the compressor should be replaced the bushings are a little pricey@ 5.00 us each [or so ] and there are like 8 or 9 on the car [the alternator and power steering pump also use them.] and belt life not only improves but also quiets them down.

impossible to assert without finding at it. an basic recharge will probable be a momentary restoration. The freon replaced into lost for some reason - leak, lacking/disconnected hose, etc. possibly the compressor is shot, hollow contained in the condenser coil, or lacking factors. Estimate everywhere from approximately $a million,000 - $4000. and that's probable why they're advertising it - too costly to restoration.

87 means R-12, ouch mega expensive
call a good shop and findout what it would cost to convert to R-134A type freon.
They need to know what is wrong first before they can tell you and look up the vehicle in their conversion books.
New Dehydrator/Accumulator and expansion device are required plus flush the evap and condensor and lines.
You can save almost the cost of these items just by not using R-12.
Fist they need to find out what is wrong with your existing system before they tear into it, so this will require them testing the car.
Beware shops do conversions wrong print my answer and take it with you!!!!!!

It depends on whats wrong w/ it.
Get a free estimate.
Call a few places and ask them if the give free estimates.
Then when you take it there tell them you want to get more than one estimate. So they won't over estimate your costs.
