I'm only 20 and live in Baton Rouge, LA and was curious where one could purchase a cheap handgun for self defense. Lately there have been some break-ins around my apartment complex and a cheap pistol would make me feel a lot better but I have no idea where one goes to purchase a gun... how long I would have to wait... how much it would cost... any help is appreciated.

If you are not familiar with firearms I would suggest that you buy a 12 gauge pump shotgun instead. They are intimidating to people looking down the barrel as they climb through your window; and you don't have to be a really good marksman to hit something. Also, you don't have to worry about shooting through a wall and blowing up your neighbor's TV set.

You must be 21 years of age in order to legally own a handgun in the US. Get a 12 guage instead.

Doin't get a Hi Point. Bersa Thunder is your best bet for a semi auto or a used revolver in .38 or .357

check this site out. and remember, a .22 will kill a guy. you don't need a 12 guage. that will probably knock you on your *** if your not "built" a nice little handgun will do it. .22's are cheap and effective. .38 calibers are nice too. the best thing to do is to let people know you have 1. that way if it's someone nearby they will hear about it and won't screw with you. btw, you can't buy it yet. your only 20, you have to be 21.

get the shotgun.....22's are for squirrels and rats...anything less than a 9mm(identical to a 38 so far as statistics go)dramatically reduces your stopping power with one shot...70% to 30%..that is a big drop...which means more shots and better hits......as of where to go...I hear ol ray nagen has a few of your local nieghbors guns and won't give em' back to thier rightful law abiding owners...if you offer him a buck ,He seems to be the type guy to maybe bend the rules for his own purposes......
