To buy or to keep? Both will vary depending on what breed you are considering.

No. this is a legitimate question. Here are some very ball-park rough guestimates.

OK here's the low down. Buying the dog is the small, easy part. It's caring for your dog that can really cost you.

Cost of dog - from a shelter it's probably around $100 - well spent money, too. You get a dog that's already spayed/neutered, up to date on his shots, housebroken (usually) and past the chewy-destructive stage.

Buying a pure-bred dog from a breeder is several hundred dollars to several thousand dollars.

Food - about $25 per month for someting that's worth feeding to your dog - not the cheap food.
Toys - $1 - $15 each. Say, $50
Vet care - puppy year is the most expensive - say $40 each for just the office visits - plus $15 per vaccination and $200 or so for spay/neuter. Let's say about $500 total.
After that - maybe $150 per year for routine vet-care.
This is assuming that there are no emergency vet calls - then all bets are off because emergency vet care is as expensive as human health care.

OK so the first year for your puppy is going to be about $900 or so - and maybe $500 per year after that.

But then there's the time you spend with your dog - and housing, board bills while you're on vacation,

Dogs aren't like cats where you can leave a dribbling faucet and bag of cat food and clean litter box and take off for the weekend. Dogs need to be walked regularly, played with regularly, paid a lot of attention.

So while a dog is not necessarily expensive - they do require a lot of time and effort to be well adjusted and healthy.

It's about a 15 year committment, too.

It varies from breed to breed, and for the quality, sex, age, and colour. You can get a homeless mutt for free, but the vet bills will be huge if it is an un-fixed, sick stray.

You can pay up to $2000 for a good showdog, and spend even more on grooming and food.

Petstore puppies usually fetch up to $1700.

If you want to invest in a dog, think of the financial costs in the long run. Maybe you get a mutt for $100, but it needs intensive grooming everymonth that will cost you more than you thought.

Or mabye your dog needs a special diet, which will cost muchmore than regular dod food.

If you want a purebred puppy, you could pay up to 2 x as much as would cost as an adult.

So consider not just the price for buying the dog, but the price for the dogs' upkeep for the rest of its 15+ year lifespan.

Last word: Buying the dog is the easy part. THe hard part is spnding up to $1000 a year on food, toys, vet care, a bed, grooming, and other things like a leash and collars.

It isn't the initial purchase price that should concern you, but $750 to $1500 is a good ball park for most purebred dogs, as the annual costs. The vet and groomers are good for $200 to $1000 a year in shots, vaccinations, haircuts and let's not forget the Man: you have to license your dog where ever you live.
Food, I forgot food! Add another $500 a years depending on size could be a bit more or less.....

I calculated about $800-$1000 (after the first year) per year without any major vet visits. The first year is the most expensive because you have the initial cost of the dog and all the supplies (i.e. collars, leash, crate, etc), and the fact that they grow the most starting at about 7 months to 12 months (this means double the food intake). After the first year its pretty much just food and basic maintanance costs, assuming there is no major vet bills.

Depends on where you go to buy the dog and what kind of dog you buy. Pounds cost less, puppy places cost alot. If you want pure bread they cost more and they charge for the papers. Size of dog matters alos, smaller dog more costs.

Having to interpret what you mean by your question not only provides me with the information that you could not provide the monetary support for a dog, but that you should not own one either. (this is just an interpretation)

They are a lifetime investment like children. They may not always be as expensive as children, but they do need the care and nourishment as any living creature does.

To buy? Or each year?? Dogs are fairly expensive to take care of.. Good quality food, and preventative health care, and anything that might come up in the future healthwise.. I say if you are worried about the cost, then you should keep saving your pennies.

if you want a good breed of dogs/puppies about $250. but if you want to be helpful go to the closest humane society and adopt a dog for free.
