I watched the flag pass by one day,
It fluttered in the breeze.
A young Marine saluted it,
And then he stood at ease.
I looked at him in uniform
So young, so tall, so proud,
With hair cut square and eyes alert
He'd stand out in any crowd.
I thought how many men like him
Had fallen through the years.
How many died on foreign soil
How many mothers' tears?
How many pilots' planes shot down?
How many died at sea
How many foxholes were soldiers' graves?
No, freedom isn't free.
I heard the sound of Taps one night,
When everything was still,
I listened to the bugler play
And felt a sudden chill.
I wondered just how many times
That Taps had meant "Amen,"
When a flag had draped a coffin.
Of a brother or a friend.
I thought of all the children,
Of the mothers and the wives,
Of fathers, sons and husbands
With interrupted lives.
I thought about a graveyard
At the bottom of the sea
Of unmarked graves in Arlington.
No, freedom isn't free.

Thanks. I sure wish you had been there when I got back from Nam. At least those who serve in Iraq know that there are a few people who are not liberal military haters like Reid and Pelosi

I agree completely........ but most will only think of having fun and not even give a nod to..... those who fought and died.

Yes people should take a moment to do so. But one thing is that the american people do not have to focus on war and are free to be a bit oblivious. They are able to live their lives not taking to heart that there are people who make it possible everyday and everywhere.

Those who make this possible just know....... its often tough. One can not talk about much and explain to others. But you know in your heart. When at a BBQ on the 4th you sit and appreciate.

I am honoring all those who gave their lives so that you and I could enjoy the freedoms we have today. I am also honoring all those who are today making sure we keep those freedoms and liberties. I am especially honoring my uncle who was killed in WW2. I set in awe of those who live in this country and denounce our military. I support their right to this dissension but I wish they would say "Thank You" to those who gave them that right!

ABSOLUTELY! Thanks , this is a great poem. Maybe we can get a copy to pelosi and reid so maybe they can learn to understand what being an American is all about.
