Prepare a budget! This should be your first step! You need to know what your limits are for each vendor.
Start looking at the internet and browsing wedding magazines for ideas you like. Its a lot easier on everyone if you at least have an idea of what you want.
Above all else...have FUN!
By the way, if its in march you can definitely start planning and buying now.

I recently got engaged and had the same problem. The best advice I can give you is to go and buy a couple wedding planning books- the time lines are especially helpful! The first thing you should do is set a date and reserve the church and reception hall- those things book the fastest. Other than that decide your budget for the wedding and how formal you want it to be and you are on your way to planning! I hope that helps. Best of luck and have fun!!! Congratulations!

Personally, I like hiring a wedding planner. Not only do they take a lot of the pressures off of you - they can negotiate really good deals etc.
However, you may wish to do this yourself.
Check out several books from the library.
Get one of those Wedding Planner guides from Barns & Noble or Borders Books. Good investment.
Subscribe to a wedding planning website - like Brides.com etc.
Set a date.
Set a budget. (one that's cast in stone)
From your budget and research, make out the guest list. Limit the number of guests you have - and then subtract 10% -15% of those guests - to keep yourself in budget.
HINT: You will always hurt someone's feelings in some manner - whether you like it or not - no matter how well you plan the guest list.
The farther ahead you can book places like reception halls, churches and such - the better deal you can make.
Don't let anyone - not your parents, not the groom, not your best buddy from grade school - not even you - stray from the budget. It only takes one little chink - first it's a trickle - the next thing you're hemmoraging money like a cut artery.
Don't stress too much. Yes, this is YOUR big day - but it's not everyone's big day. Try to keep things in perspective.
You'll make a lovely bride.

1st of all call your doctor and order Prozac. You gonnah need it!
Next decide what kind of budget you have to spend. Put together your guest list. What you buy and how much depends highly on that. Don't buy a dress till you figure out where and what style of the wedding. Believe me. You are going to spend a lot of money on the dress make sure it's the one you want. Unless you see your dream dress then you can build the style of the wedding around that. If you want to get some little things out of the way get you can buy the cake cutter, etc.
What really helped me was going to weddingchannels.com
You can create a wedding list and data base and they have lots of helpful ideas.
Good luck, congratulations and remember to breathe!

I am getting married in October 07 and I felt the same way. I haven't even been to many people's weddings yet, first to get married of all my friends.
I SAY.... Start with who is paying for this, then decide how much they or you are willing to spend and then find a place to hold your event at. Then set the date based upon avaliability and go from there. 1st draft guest list for an idea of a budget.

Congrats on your engagement! Depending upon where you live, some things need to be done up to a year in advance, so there are some things you should do NOW. Go see your minister and arrange for a date and the premarital counselling. Once you have a date, then you need to book the venue, caterer and band. Other things can wait a bit - the invitations, your gown, bridesmaids' dresses, tuxes, flowers ... and on it goes.
Good luck and have fun with it all!

Budgeting! You need to know a ball park range. Next I would work on the guest list and then the wedding party. Then a location. Those are what you want to focus on for the first three months.

Who is in the wedding? Who are you going to invite? What are you going to serve for dinner? Where is the reception going to be? What are you wearing and your wedding party? DJ or Band? Who? Caterer or family cooking? Who's making the cake? Colors of the wedding? Flowers? Decorations? Lots of places to start but do it all by starting LISTS! Then buy what you can or need. Lots of websites to help plan a wedding even magazines. Try chatrooms.

Decide on a budget, choose a date, then look for locations to have the wedding and reception. After that everything will start falling into place.
