We just moved into a new home and I JUST now got around to purchasing an American flag (talk about the 11th hour pre-July 4). Anyhow, I will fly it year round.

It will be mounted to the garage with the full and half mast options. Please tell me what the proper placement for mounting is (ie. inches/feet from the ground etc). I know to keep a light on it at night but figure if I am going to display my American pride, I might as well do it the proper way (I dont like seeing people do "whatever" they feel like with the flag).

The first informative and detailed answer = 10 points.
Thank you and God Bless America

Thanks all for the info. I was mostly concerned about the proper height at which to fly. Seems like no rule applies here.

You already know not to fly it in the dark which puts you well ahead of so many other well-meaning Americans.

It is only flown at half mast when directed by the President or Congress. When flying it at half mast, raise it to top, then lower it halfway. When retiring it from half mast, raise it to the top and then lower it.

Do not fly it during 'inclement weather' (hurricanes, high winds). During normal rainstorms, it's fine to fly.

It should not touch any horizontal surface including the roof, ground or floor.

There isn't a specific height to fly it, but it should not be lower nor higher than any other national flag. It should be higher than any state or other flag. When flown with other flags it should be to it's own right or if flown with multiple national flags, in the center.

For the most complete rules, visit the American Legion website.

Thank you Mom for showing your dedication to our nation. Thank you for caring enough to fly our flag properly. Remember, the red stands for the blood my brothers in arms have shed to keep us free.

When displayed from a staff in a meeting hall or church, the US flag should hold the position of superior prominence in advance of the audience and to the speaker's right as he faces the audience.

When displayed either horizontally or vertically against a wall, the union should be uppermost and to the flag's own right, that is, to the observer's left.

If displayed flat on the speaker's platform, the flag should be displayed above and behind the speaker.

In a two flag table display set, the US flag should be on the speaker's right with any other flag to the left.

In a parade if there is a line of other flags, the US flag should be on the marching right, or in front of the center of that line. The US flag should not be displayed on a float, except from a staff and should not be draped over the hood, top or sides of a vehicle, but from a staff affixed to the right fender.

No other flag or pennant should be placed above or, if on the same level, on the right of the American flag.

When flags of states, cities or localities, or pennants of societies are flown on the same halyard, the American flag should always be at the peak.

When flags are flown from adjacent staffs, the flag of the United States should be hoisted first and lowered last.

When flags of two or more nations are displayed, they should be of the same size and flown from separate staffs of the same height.

There isn't any "rule" about the height of the flag. It must be the highest and the biggest if other flags are displayed at the same time. It shouldn't touch the ground while hoisting or lowering.

The flag, when flown at half-staff, should be first hoisted to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff position. The flag should be again raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day. By "half-staff" is meant lowering the flag to one-half the distance between the top and bottom of the staff.

All international locations flags fly on the same top, none larger or decrease. State flags however fly below the united statesflags different than for Texas. Texas grow to be as quickly as its very own u . s . so the Texas flag is the only state flag that may fly on the same top because of the fact the united statesflag.

If you're a lib, you fly it covered in feces and urine below the flags of France, the Rainbow Alliance, and Greenpeace.
