I think its cruel. And alot of people who did it do not actually realize what does declawing mean to cat. I also blame vets for not going into details regarding this procedure. I know few people who did it to their cats few years ago. When I explained them the details of the procedure they said that they had no idea and if they would decide for another cat they would never do it again.
I think if people want to declaw the cat they should not even think about getting one. This procedure is illegal in over 40 countries. And I wish U.S. would have the same law

Years ago I did have one of my cats declawed. In his case it was the best thing to do, but I would never do it again. He was an indoor cat and never made attempts to go outside unlike most cats. I rescued a declawed cat from the pound and It appears that the Vet did a botched up job. Declawing is painful and if your cat gets outside he has no defense against other animals. I found my youngest cat and she sneaks out all the time. She is somewhat of a property guard cat and occasionally get in fights. Without those claws she would be in trouble. I have a scratching pad that she likes although she will sometimes try the furniture. I slap my hands together and she stops. No to declawing as I have learned.

I would never declaw a cat, simply because it just seems horribly painful. Even if they are put to sleep when it is done, the recovery would still be painful. I know I have broken a nail to the quick and everytime I touched it, it hurt alot, so I can only imagine having the nail ripped out. Yikes! I have owned 2 cats that were declawed when I got them. One of them was 1/2 bob cat, her name was baby. She was so very pretty, but she could be very very mean. Even though she had no front claws, she made very good use out of the back ones. She could even climb trees. The cat I have now was declawed when I adopted her from the shelter. She is the wierdest cat I have ever met. She is as sweet as she can be, and never offers to scratch or bite. As long as she has food, someone to pet her, and a nice place to nap, she is perfectly content. She purrs non stop.

Barbarians, nuts, dingdongs, crazy! It is mean, excuse me, CRUEL to do that to an animal! And you are right, I feel sorry too that he cannot defend himself! That is so sad! My best friend declawed her cat too! But, the good thing is they still have their teeth if they need them. The good thing about my friend's cat, it wasn't my friend's fault, it was their parent's idea! What kind of barbarians would do this to a cat? It is like if someone had you as a pet, and shaved all your hair off! I am writing so much, not because I want to be rated best answer, but because I care so much for these poor cats! They now have no way to defend themselves from dogs, strangers, and just general enemies! We should put a stop to this declawing! And I am making a stand for what I care for! STOP DECLAWING! STOP DECLAWING! STOP DECLAWING!!!

Most people don't realize that when you are "declawing" a pet there is more to it than just pulling the claws out. I have one cat that is front declawed, two that aren't at all. All are happy, but in hindsight I never would have declawed the first knowing what I know today.

I did it once and I will never do it again. I had to make a fast decision and it was because she was destroying the interior of the doors in my townhouse. I did not have the money to keep fixing them. But never again will I do it.
If you declaw then the cats should be indoors only. My cats are indoors only. I have 2 cats. One was declawed before I got her. I got her because her previous owner wanted to put her down because he said she was mean. She's a sweet and loving cat. She is jealous and prefers me when I am around. But she seems smart and knows that I'm the one who takes care of her.

SOme people do thinks without thinking or doing the research of what they want there are way better ways to stop bad claw behavior like a spray gun or spray bottle works for me and I have had cats my whole life. Declawing personally is very cruel. First itsnot just removing the claws but they actually cut down to the first joint .

I think it is cruel in most situations. It's like cutting off your fingers to the first knuckle and leaves your cat defenseless! I understand why some people have done it, though. My best has had her cat for years and got pregnant. When the baby came, the cat would always try to play with her and end up clawing and scratching the baby. It was either get the cat declawed or get rid of the cat.

i think declawing is not necessary and cat's are not supposed to be declawed. There's a reason why they do have their claws and people who don't like that, shouldn't get a cat at all. If it's bothering he owner too bad, there's still the caps you can put onto the claws.
