If so then why do some religious (key word is SOME) want to ban and even burn certain books simple because they disagree with the subject matter? While it is their right to verbal disagree about the book, it is not right to ban or burn it from others who want to read it.
Such as Harvest Assembly of God Church in Penn Township.

Should Intellectual Freedom be allowed?

Seriously why ban and burn books? Do you realize that doing so will lead to a world very similar to the novel Fahrenheit 451?

Source of banning and burning book is here
at the American Library Association website.

I don't believe in banning books. I do believe in censorship and labeling. Books should all go in their appropriate places at the Libraries and book stores. Books of sexually explicit material should not be sold or checked out by children and teenagers. Christian books should be in their own category. Political books should be in their own category. History books should be in their own category. I think the way libraries currently catalog books are appropriate. I am not one of those Bible Thumping Fundamentalist that believe all books outside the Bible are evil. I think as a Christian it is good to read books to educate yourself. I am going to go to the Library today and check out history books. I think I am going to look at the Greek and Roman empire cultures. I would recommend staying away from certain books but I would not recommend we burn books I don't approve of. If you burn the books I dislike some one else will burn the books I like and so we create a vicious circle that will only lead to a negative outcome. I say you write what you want and if I don't like it I won't read it.

Banning and Burning books has been happening almost since the days of the first books...

I once read about a bookstore owner that was FORCED by a court order to destroy all of his pornographic materials. This owner was convicted on multiple counts of selling such material to minors (as well as cigarettes, drug paraphenalia, etc).. his fine was the cost of the materials he was to destroy.. and the method of destruction was burning.. (he was also sentenced to 10 months in jail).

Many things are banned.. like advertisements for tobacco on television.. or advertisements the show people actually drinking alcohol on television...

Books are often banned from young impressionable children because of the psychological damage they can cause...

Communities have not only the RIGHT but the OBLIGATION to protect their citizens and they often set moral standards for materials offered for sale within the community.. they do not restrict people from traveling to another community to obtain such materials if the purchaser is of legal age...

Churches often go the "extra mile" and express to their members the preference of not reading certain materials or watching certain movies/shows.. such as my Church's notice that we should not view "R" rated movies and that we should be "very selective" on those that were rated "PG"...

The Harvest Church's Burning the Harry Potter books (I think that is what they burned if I remember right).. hmmm.. I also seem to recall that the books were purchased.. so it is their right to do with them as they please...

I do agree with you that books should not be involuntarily destroyed.. nor should they be banned from people of legal age to read.. but some ARE (for instance you cannot go out and legally purchase a book on how to construct a nuclear bomb with step by step instructions)...

But I also believe that there should be much harsher punishments for people who publish such books by obtaining illegal materials (such as pornographic pictures of children).

In my faith, we do not ban books, magazine, etc. Why do it when there is no real way to police such a thing. Besides, all it does is encourage subversive behavior.

However, it is our belief that certain things like playboy, or playgirl come from satan. Once in a blue moon we'll have a "bookburning," as you would call it, to remove those temptations from our midst. I'm in my 30's and I haven't been to one since I was a teenager.

I am not familiar with that Church and what it does. We are not into banning books.

People can read what they want to read. Christians just encourage reading books that are wholesome and uplifting. The key word is encourage, not ban.

Banning certain books JUST because you don't like them is flat out retarded. If you dislike certain books or types of books ... here's a really cool idea - don't read them!!

Extremists appear in many guises. it is always the radical , minority view that gets the press. Ban Harry Potter, make the 6 o'clock news.
