Simpliest way to put it - you can't.

Because many of the XP system files are "in use" while Windows is running, they are protect from changes, deletions and often copying. So any attempt to simply drag and drop XP to a flash drive will fail.

If you are wanting to copy all of this to a flash drive as a backup, don't bother. It would be useless to you in repairing your PC should it crash and die. You would be unable to copy Windows back on to the computer because 1) you hit the "in use" issue again, and 2) if you are needing to copy Windows back then Windows is not working so you can use it to copy itself back (Catch 22 situation).

Instead, you need only backup any data you have on the PC (music, videos, letters, pictures, etc.) If it crashes, you just reinstall Windows and the programs from their original disk.

The other possibility is that you are trying to copy Windows to Flash Drive so you can boot into Windows from it. Again, copying the files will not work. It will not make the Flash Drive bootable. You would need to reinstall Windows, only using a custom install in which you have it install Windows onto the Flash Drive. You would then be able to boot from that drive.

You cannot and will not do any gud too, if you are trying to do a normal copy and paste. Cos, you will not be able to boot from it, in the event of a repair....Rather to boot from the flash drive, you can use third party softwares like Bart's PE builder which can be referred via googling.
