I did a lot of research on this. We ended up doing letters with magnets inside. The letter was simple and asked that people kindly save the date, why we chose that date, and included the hotel information for hotels that we had special rates with. The magnet was attached to the bottom with clear picture corners. It had our engagement picture on it and a calander with our date circled. I bought them on ebay. You have to look around for the best deal, as it changes, but it was about $100 for 150 (you could also search for save the date post cards on ebay as well). There is one that i see advertised a lot but is expensive and that is magnet street weddings.
Additionally, Kodak Picture Gallery & Vistaprint.com does some nice things. We took one of our engagement pictures and turned it into a xmas cards on vista print. Its relatively inexpensive as well.
Hope this helps!

Talk to the photographer who is shooting your wedding. Ask if they will give you a special price on engagement portraits. Once you get that photo, upload it to kodakgallery.com and design your own announcement. You can also wait until after the wedding to send the announcement, which is customary. Then you just take a nice shot of you and your hubby (maybe the same one you enclose in your thank you cards) and do the same thing.

The wording can be vey simple:

We are delighted to announce that we became husband and wife on July 3, 2007. Our thoughts and prayers were with all of our loved ones on that joyous day.

OK are you sending these to people, or putting it in the paper?

If you are putting it in the paper, do NOT put the date and location of the wedding. Just say "Fall 2008 wedding is planned".

If this is to be sent out to people, then there are some nice templates online to check out. A google search will pop up a lot of results.

I would go to a print shop instead of ordering from a book or magazine. These places are cheaper because they do the printing right in their store so you are not paying for postage and all the extras. You also get exactly what you WANT including style, font and size. Lots of these print shops will also save your save the date card and then you can match your thank you letters, napkins, party favors and invitations to it. I used one of these when I was getting married and they were wonderful, I got everything I ever wanted pluse saved money and didn't have to compromise on anything! Good luck.

If you go with a professional photographer, you would have to order them through him, because you can't just take that picture and do with it what you want.
Otherwise, use one of the candid pics from the wedding, and get it done at the Kodak kiosk at your local drugstore. Or, if you have tech friends, ask them to help out.

go to walmart or target and have a picture taken in their photo center, they both do AWESOME jobs. then scan the picture into your computer and place the image in a word document... type the announcement below the photo.

if you want buy cards from wilton and use www.wiltonprint.com you can click on a link that will bring up the template in word and you can print the announcements on card stock.

I would ask the photographer if he can do them. If not just about any printshop program now can do post cards. I think this is a great idea.
