Prayer is the elevation of the mind and heart to God:
+ In praise of his glory
+ In petition for some desired good
+ In thanksgiving for a good received
+ In intercession for others before God
Through prayer the Christian experiences a communion with God through Christ in the Church.
"For me, prayer is a surge of the heart; it is a simple look turned toward heaven, it is a cry of recognition and of love, embracing both trial and joy." (St. Thérèse of Lisieux)
"Prayer is the raising of one's mind and heart to God or the requesting of good things from God." (St. John Damascene)
But when we pray, do we speak from the height of our pride and will, or "out of the depths" of a humble and contrite heart? (Psalm 130:1)
He who humbles himself will be exalted; humility is the foundation of prayer. Only when we humbly acknowledge that "we do not know how to pray as we ought," are we ready to receive freely the gift of prayer. "Man is a beggar before God."
With love in Christ.

The "Our Father" - since that is the prayer from our Lord himself.
It is the best prayer and the prayer on which to base all others.
Say the Lord's Prayer 300 times a day and God will NOT get tired of it, despite what some who've answered here say. Who ever told them God doesn't like repetitive praying? Jesus tells us, "When you pray, say....."
Keep in mind, too, that the Psalms are the "Prayerbook of the Bible."

The best prayers to me are the ones where there is a two way connection. Where we have a time before the Lord, opening up our being to Him by confessing our sins and applying the Blood over our conscience. This opens up our fellowship with the Lord and makes our time with Him so sweet. We can just talk to the Lord in prayer.. praying for ourselves, other brothers and sisters... for our unsaved friends and relatives... when our hearts are opened to the Lord He then has a way to impress us with a certain person or matter to pray for.. This allows Him a way to work in the situation. Most of all our prayers should not just be onesided.. where we say our piece to the Lord and proceed to rise and go our way... we should spend a little time before the Lord.. by simply calling upon His name and waiting before Him...even reading and praying back the word to help our minds from straying and rest in the Lord so that He can speak back something in our spirits to us. Its really such a blessing when we can take this time before the Lord to just be there for Him... to help bear whats on His heart for others and for His purpose.

Ones that come from the heart. I'm not sure I believe in recited prayers. People can recite anything while thinking of anything else. I like original thought and genuine worship.

those from the heart and those that draw christ to ones heart.
these include the rosary, the our father etc....
sometimes others capture what our heart desires, these prayers are rampant in the catholic church. none the less whatever brings us close and into communion with god are the best prayers. another note, "the family that prays together stays together".

Why would anyone pray to a God, asking him to cure a cancer that God put in the person in the first place? Prayer is useless.
