Most solid state electronics will last for 20 years or more. That being said there have been alot of advances in microwave ovens since 1989. Shielding is better (radiation leaks less) and the power has been increased tremendously. I takes me 1:45 to pop a bag of popcorn on my not-much-better-than-entry-level microwave I bought last year.

I have two microwave ovens that are older then yours. They both still work great. Your only concern would be if the door does not close tight which could let a microwave leak. Just don't stand close to it during use. The power of an oven will not cause a danger for a great distance. The microtron, the tube that powers the oven, can last for many years. The Radar on the ship that I worked on in the Navy had been going for over twenty years and it put out one hell of a lot more power then your oven. Keep it until it doesn't work any more.

My microwave oven was also bought in 1989.The make is Sanyo.Still works great after all this time.I never heard anything about replacing an old microwave for a new one. or of an old one making anyone sick. You could check with a company that make them, they should know more about it.

Some of the reallly old models use types of microwaves that could cause cancer. The old microwaves take out some of the particles from the plates and in your food, even if the plate is microwave safe. Now the new ones use microwaves that don't do that as much.

My parents had one that lasted over 10 years. I believe that it was 14 years old when it finally died. I remember my mom commenting on how long it had lasted. It was a chefmate, not even the most reputable brand. I have had my current microwave oven for 4 years, and it has no signs of problems

My sister in law has one of the original Radar Ranges. This is probably from the 60s. She is still using it. My microwave is 20 years old and still works fine. There are basically no moving parts to wear out. Mine has a carousel that revolves and it still works.
