The sons of god mentioned at Gen 6:2 are angels, spirit creatures. This expression is applied to angels at Job 1:6; 38:7. The angels were not worshipers of God, the bible shows that their marriage to the daughters of men resulted in increased badness in the earth. Some translations use the word heros of old, more accurately the word is translated "mighty ones" of old. The children that resulted from the demons or bad sons of god were called Nephilims. They were giants and mean tyrants that helped to make conditions worse. The "mighty ones who were of old, the men of fame" were not men of fame with God, they did not survive the flood as did Noah and his family.
In mythology, the fame and dread of the Nephilim, gave rise to many mythologies of heathen people who, after the confusion of the languages at Babel, were scattered throughout the earth. Though the historical forms of the Genesis accout were very distorted and embellished, there was a remarkable resemblance in the stories. Like those of the Greeks (being only one example) in which gods and goddesses mated with humans to produce superhuman heros and fearful demigods having god-man characteristics.
Hope this helped.

I asked this same question or answered one similar earlier. I think the Greek and Roman gods and goddesses were these angels, the third that ended up being kicked out with their leader. Lucifer. The nephilium were their offspring. Have you been reading the book of Enoch?

The King James version reads "1 And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,
2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.
3 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.
4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown."

"Sons of God" means righteous men. "Daughters of men" means wicked women. "Giants" simply means a larger race of human beings (Same species). "My spirit shall not always strive with man" means that if mankind is wicked the Holy Ghost can't be with them.

Basically the righteous men married outside their faith and outside their race and became wicked. Their children took after the race of the mother and they were physically large and strong. The Holy Ghost could no longer dwell with them because of their wickedness. Then comes the ark, followed by the flood.

People read way too much into these verses. Perhaps their misunderstanding developed into tales of mythological Gods.
