It's not illegal, but it damn well should be in my opinion.
Start at the local mall. Every time I leave that place I go home with 2-3 things under my wipers to throw away.

Depends on where you live...in some places it IS illegal but not most. Like the earlier poster said, it isn't usually enforced, but again, that depends on where you live. In Westminster CO, it was illegal to put garage sale (or any other type of sign) on a telephone pole or lamp post and a VERY active political group that supported the original law also took pains to enforce it by monitoring and reporting violations!...sure cleaned up that city!
Personally, I wouldn't do it...the cost probably wouldn't be worth the response! Think of the time to create and distribute the flyer, and the cost of producing it, and the possible cost of negative reactions and balance this against the chances that the people whose cars you target actually WANT to go to a garage sale and it seems like a giantic waste to me!
Most people that are avid "garage salers" look at the newspaper to find good sales...the rest find sales by driving around looking for signs. If they're at the mall (or wherever you want to go to distribute these flyers), they probably aren't in your target market!!!
And don't forget to let your neighbors know about the sale...no car flyers unless you want to make enemies, but you should at least let your closest neighbors know there might be a crowd at your house on Saturday!
...you might also ask a few local stores to let you post a sign on the door or on their bulletin board...many grocery stores have a board for ppl to post things like yard sales and lost pets...and a sign on the door at all the convenience stores in the neighborhood would probably draw a LOT more customers than car flyers!

It certainly should be but obviously isn't!! Any idea how many of them end up on the ground at the shopping mall?? What a mess for the parking lot sweeper!! To say nothing of the ecological effect of the ink and birds...
I would suggest posting an ad in your local newspaper or on Craig's list!! I don't know if yard sale signs are allowed in your neighborhood or not, but if they are put them on all the major corners around your house too!!
Good luck with your sale!! : )

If you are on a privately-owned lot like a mall parking lot, in some places it's illegal and can be considered trespassing - but it's rarely enforced. A permit for your sale has nothing to do with your right to go on other people's property.

i get them on my car all the time for various things.
It's illegal to nail garage sale signs on telephone poles , but people do it all the time.
Technically, it's illegal to have a garage sale and not pay taxes on everything you sell, but people do it all the time.
Personally, i don't like to put flyers on peoples cars, because sometimes people are violently obsessive about people touching their precious cars and might yell at you.
I would do it though, if you want to.

I agree with Judy, the Top Contributor's response. Posting an event on craigslist will draw a more targeted audience.
Good luck!

It should be illegal. It's REALLY annoying!
What's wrong with it??? If I'm not interested, then *I* have to dispose of the paper, and that's a pain when there's no wastebasket around.
