A breeder that breeds for the betterment of the breed, knows the genetic issues of the particular breed they have and tests to make sure they are not passing along health problems. A hobby breeder will have homes lined up before breeding.

A hobby breeder is one who invests his/her time in showing and breeding dogs because you love your hobby, instead of approaching it as a business with the intention of making money at it. I don't know you at all, but if you have spent the time to find good quality dogs, know the breed, spend time caring for you dogs because you love your "hobby", spend your "free" time on weekends grooming and showing your dogs and pursuing your hobby with the same enthusiasm that a hobby gardener spends weeding flowers, and are always looking for a way to get more involved and help other people to learn and enjoy your "hobby", and breed to produce better dogs so that you and others can continue to enjoy this fascinating hobby, then you are a hobby breeder. Welcome to the hobby club.

Most reputable breeders come under the category of 'hobby' breeders. That is what breeding is -- a hobby! reputable breeders do not make money or a living from breeding therefore it is a hobby.

I feel that "hobby breeders" do not feel the same way that breeders do who have their sire and damn examined by their vet, heart, hip displacia, vacinations, etc. so the pups are clear and free of any harmful genetics. They should present this certificate from the vet to the person buying the pup. The breeder should be asking questions as to the proper care you are going to give this pup, exercise and disipline, anything pertaining to how you plan on raising this pup and doing so. Also keeping in touch with the person who bought the puppy.
There are way too many puppymills and breeders out there just to make a buck. The internet is the worst place to get a pup....from bad experience I know that NJ is one of the best states to buy from. If you go on www.njcapsa.org you will read as a consumer what you are entitled to, and people you can write to for information. Most of the breeders out there are doing it for the profit and do not care who they sell their dogs too......

A respectable breeder is one who breeds to keep that breed going. They are not in it for the money, in fact it takes alot of money to ensure they have healthy puppies. If you are breeding for the fun of it, then I would say that you are adding to the already over populated shelters. Backyard breeders and puppy mills are the #1 reasons why so many are euthenized every year. If someone is breeding for the money then I would have to say they are either a backyard breeder or a puppy miller.
Unless you are going to get a puppy from a respectable breed, I would have go with adopting from a rescue or shelter!

Do you breed your dogs to sell? Do you have more than one female? Do you breed them every time they go into heat? If you have the one female and you let her get pregnant for the fun of having puppies every now and then, you are a hobby breeder. Has nothing to do with being purebred or mutt. But really should get the dog fixed if you are not a serious breeder. Too many unwanted animals in this world. And they live longer, healthier lives.

well i don't know you, but i have had great danes in my life, i have had them all fixed till now. i would very much like to breed my female Harlequin. not for profit but for me, of course i wouldn't be able to keep them all but they would go to very good homes (i WOULD do follow up visits). anyway i would not breed her to just any male dane, i know not to breed her to another harlequin, the results could be very bad for the puppies. i have done my research and i would only breed her to a black or mantle. does this make me a hobby breeder?

I don't know if you are a hobby breeder. But, I do know that they are just adding to the problem of pet overpopulation and I think it is very sad. There are way, way to many dogs and cats in the world that nobody wants, but people are still breeding and breeding more and more animals everyday. I think it all should STOP!!!! All this crazy cross-breeding stuff. That in it's self is just not right!!!! If there were supposed to be animals like that in the world, God would have tooken care of that for us!! People need to START ADOPTING AND SPAYING AND NUETERING, AND STOP BREEDING!!!!
Absolutely, nothing personal to you, it's just my opinion!!
