Losing weight has become some kind of obsession these days. Doctors will have you believing that weight is the cause of all illnesses. The weight has got nothing to do with it. You should focus on being healthy and being happy with yourself. Don't go on a diet, change your lifestyle. There are some really healthy recipes out there that are easy to prepare and surprisingly tasty. Exercise is important but it is also important to go at your own pace. If you are already obese, it will be very easy to overstrain yourself or to pull a muscle. Find something you love doing, dancing, martial arts, tai chi, hiking...something, and then set aside some time every day or every other day to do it.
It all starts with a positive outlook and feeling good about yourself. Some people take comfort in food. Is that what you are doing? Look at your eating habits now and try and work out why it is that you're eating unhealthily. Is it because it's convenient? Or because eating makes you feel good? Do you just enjoy food? Or is it your sweet tooth that is causing the problem? You have to identify the problem before you can find a solution. The same solution won't work for everyone. Just don't give up.

I think you need to concentrate on smaller goals. Five stone will seem overwhelming, try going for the goal of one stone. When you've achieved that set another goal of losing yet another stone and so on. Also try making miner changes until you get into the swing of things. I think that to go from eating whatever you want to living on a ultra strict diet is a recipe for disaster! Try cutting out butter from your bread and cutting down on the sugar in your tea. Change white bread for brown etc. With every stone you lose make the next part of your diet a little more strict, hopefully little changes over time will be more doable for you. If you fall off the waggon now and again don't think 'well stuff the diet altogether' simply carry on as if you hadn't binged at all. As for exercise, again little by little. Start by doing some walking or swimming to build up some stamina before you attempt to go on a five mile run or something like that! I wish you all the luck in the world because everyone knows that losing weight is hard! You're reaching out and I believe that's a really good sign, I think you're ready to do it! Go for it.x.

Do it one day at a time. Try not to think of it as a DIET but a change of lifestyle. Try and substitute one meal with fruit and eat little but often, and instead of having chocolate have a low calorie chocolate drink instead (only 40 calories).Change to skimmed or semi skimmed milk and use a little less. Just put smaller portions on a smaller plate, It'll look the same amount. You'll soon loose weight and try to get a friend to loose a little weight along side you, that way if you have a weak moment you could call them up and believe me after five minutes talking you'll have forgotten about the craving. You can do it. Good luck. Here's to a slimmer more beautiful you!

I have felt like you for many years. I battled with my weight for such a long time. I did eventually join Weight Watchers just over a year ago. I lost 3 stone in 4 months. I found their diet really easy to follow and so enjoyable. I am now a gold member and attend maintenance classes every 2/3 weeks. I feel so healthy now, so much more confident and have dropped two dress sizes. Give it a go. I did it. I bet you can too. Good luck.

find daily calorie intake calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours - it optimizes your metabolism)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have protein (lean meat, legumes etc) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio is the only fat burning exercise (running, jogging, swimming, spinning, elliptical etc) 4-6 times a week for 30-50min (ideally 45min because the first 20-30min body burns carbs and only then starts burning fat), light weight training (more muscle=faster metabolism)
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, pasta etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

I've noticed my motabolism has changed recently (I'm getting old) and am trying small steps to try and lose weight. I don't believe in diets, so am trying to change my lifestyle, but it's really hard as I'm such a foodie!
I keep a stash of healthy snack as work and in the cupboard at home. I really like ryvita and low fat hummous/salsa, low fat cream cheese, low fat yogurt on fruit, bananas, cherry tomatoes, celery or carrot sticks and those dips.
I've also cut out butter from my diet, along with creamy sauces (not more double cream carbonara!). Instead I use low fat creme fraiche or low fat yogurt in recipies.
I'm learning to like yogurt buy putting it in homemade healthy curries.
I'm really struggling with exercise though, as I'm too self conscious to go to classes or the gym. I love swimming on deserted beaches and try to do that when the weather is good (lol).
I read that you should start by trying to set a-side 30 mins a week to do exercise and gradually work it up to 5 days, start off with easy stuff like a brisk walk, housework/chores that build up a sweat, also try buying a skipping rope. As you get more confident try jogging or gentle classes like yoga (eek!)?

Well, the simple answer to your question is that you can't change your body without the effort. You need to make that decision; that the effort is worth it (which it is!!). If your health is suffering, then that is great motivation. But there are no recommendations that anyone can offer you if you say you won't work at it.
Read this website, its got nutrition tips and great weight loss advice. Perhaps it will change the way you look at the word "diet":

No one can change your body but you.

Think about what you are doing to your body. I didn't and now I am having to deal with the effects of that...type 2 diabetes, nerve damage, kidney damage, sore knees and hips among many other things. It took the diagnosis of diabetes a year ago to make me take a serious look at myself and start getting the weight off! I am now 6 stone lighter and on my way to a healthier body.
Look at the GI Diet, its easy and very healthy.

You need to put the effort in and make a life style change. Change what you eat and the way you view food.
You need to introduce exercise into your routine - it doesn't have to be going to the gym every night but wallking with friends, swimming, playing tennis etc.
Get your freinds and family to help you.
