I think its fun because of the sense of adventure you get by travelling through forests, hills, and mountains. Plus the scenery and fresh air don't hurt either. ;)

Hiking can be either lots of fun or an absolute chore. It depends on what you tend to accomplish on the hike and if you need to be at a location in some set time frame. When hiking into a camping area, I make darn sure that even if it is only a couple of miles, I have loads of time. The reason is that I tend to hike like I hunt, very slow paying very close attention to the surroundings. BTW, I "hunt" with a camera, not a firearm. Sometimes, the hike OUT of an area gets to be a chore if the trail is steep and long. Then it can be less than fun! If at all possible, I try to make sure that I can simply set up a "mid-point" camp and start back on the trail the next day. My hiking is mostly in Nevada with a trip or two into California once in a while.

I love to pick a really quiet area that helps transport my mind back to the days of Henry David Thoreau. I am only recently hopeful that I will get back into hiking after five years of antibiotics from a tick bite. Please make sure you protect yourself from these nasty critters, and if you have any indication at all that you were bitten (even if the rash doesn't appear) go to the doctor and insist that you get on a course of antibiotics ASAP. (Don't waste time waiting for the results to come back. There are as many false negatives as positives.) In the meantime, have fun.
If you can find a copy of Thoreau's "Walking," take the time to read it. He first delivered it as a lecture.

I enjoy it because the scenery is great and besides that, I love hearing the sounds of birds singing, waterfalls rushing, rivers running, wind blowing in the trees and stuff like that. I also like the way the trees smell. And then, if it's wildflower season, I enjoy them too. In the fall, the trees turn and that's beautiful too. And if I'm lucky, I might see wildlife. The whole experience just makes me happy :-).
