depends on your living situation.
a hanging bag of appropriate weight for you is the best.
however if you live in an apartment where the ceiling can't hold it or don't want to have to pay for a standing metal support for a hanging bag (they can be very ugly looking too), then you are stuck with a standing bag.
If your ceiling doesn't hold it and you don't have the ability to put it on a structure outside (you live in a city in an apartment), then don't try. It will fall, it will fall on you the moment you hit it in any direction a significant distance. not only ruining your workout, but falling on you. I speak from experience and used all maner of contraptions (except the standing metal frame for a hanging bag which actually works) to try to get it to work before biting the bullet and buying a standing bag with a sand base.
if you buy a standing one, go with sand for the base- expect to need around 200lbs of it depending on the bag- don't use water. I was always afraid it would leak or break and vaccuming sand is easier than dealing with water damage.
it is not NEARLY as good as a hanging one- but its better than punching a pillow attatched to a string.
or you could just find a good gym that has one, many gyms do even if they aren't boxing gyms. look for one that has "cardio boxing" or "tae bo" type of classes and ask them before you join if you can use the boxing equipment in the off hours.
If you are using it for kicking, you might also consider an extra long bag so you can strike it lower to practice the more effective low kicks.

Both have their good and bad points so I have both in my studio. Hanging bags move around more so they allow you to work on your timing a little better and also movement as you move in conjunction with the bag as it swings and circles. Ground standing bags give you more a stationary target and can help a beginner to learn how to judge their distance faster and better and develop their combinations a little faster. For experienced fighters they can also get a more intense workout since the bag is always there in a position to be hit or kicked. Some hanging bags swing and move excessively and it is a little harder to accomplish this especially if the the bag is a lighter, smaller one, and the fighter is a larger person.
The ground standing bags for adults at my studio are filled with 175 or 200 lbs of sand and sit on a carpeted hardwood floor. Ones for children are filled with 75 or 100 lbs of sand. The hanging bags are hung from a steal central beam and the chain fits up into a four foot steel pipe welded to the beam and is flush with the ten foot suspended ceiling at the bottom so that the bags don't swing excessively or damage the suspended ceiling. Asian World of Martial Arts has several steel type brackets for hanging bags and special care needs to be taken if you are hanging it from a floor joist in a basement. You will want to reinforce the floor joist that it hangs from on both sides with the neighboring floor joists in front of and behind the bag if you are hanging it in a basement. Most basements are not tall enough so there is an advantage there with ground standing bags since they are height ajustable and will allow you to punch and kick to the face and head and not hit chains or rings that the bag my be hanging on.

I like the hanging bags for mobility and use it to bob and weave. Circular motion and getting a sense of movement toward you is great practice. Also, a bag that is coming at you creates a lot more force. So hitting it while it swings toward you helps create a stronger impact
I've used an eye bolt and drilled a starter hole in one of the beam/two by fours in my garage. The eye bolts have held my 75 and 100 lbs bags just great. I'd check with the guys at home depot to make sure you have all your ducks in a row.

in my experience, ground standing bags are great if you want to practice kicking & punching to train & strengthen the muscle used. a hanging bag is a target that's never still & is better if you're interested in improving your sparring.
personally, i think that a hanging bag is just annoying, b/c your opponent isn't likely to move as far away & in the same pattern as a hanging bag will. i use a ground standing bag b/c i think training your muscles is more useful, plus if you take a class in the martial arts (which, in my opinion, everyone should, lol), you'll get all you need in sparring out of that class. .

i have a hanging bag its great but...ground standing bag
This is a GREAT bag for someone that wants to hit/kick the bag without taking up all that space required for a regular hanging bag. Easy and VERY fun to use. Easy to move around too.

i've had both and the hanging one has more give to it, which is much better, the standing one I had, not only messed up my right wrist from hitting it wrong, but also the plastic tubing, where the bag meets the stand, started cracking after a few months. so if you have a spot to hang a bag, i suggest buying one of those.

The only thing I can say to help is this...my uncle had a speed bag mounted on the ceiling of his basement. It shook the entire house when you would hit it. I have a hunch a heavy bag would be similar, but probably not as bad.

a million. relies upon on the animal, deer and bear are a great tree stand hunt because of the fact they're honed in to trails. attempt searching mule deer or elk and you could desire to be cellular. 2. relies upon on your weapon, bowhunting is often greater successfull from a stand. 3. relies upon on the land, woodsy components with stable game trails are surprising for stands, open land with small brush and ravines want floor blinds.
