Little Italy won't be cheap.

In Chinatown pick a place on Mott St. between Canal and Bowery.

In Little Italy, check out Mulberry St. north of Canal up to Houston. Restaurants almost always have menus posted near the door.

Little Italy is very tiny these days as it's getting swallowed by Chinatown expansion, and better Italian food can be found in the West Village anyway. (Try Mario Battali's restaurant Lupo -- it's not cheap as such but it's not too pricey -- for something a little different, or any of the Italian places on Sullivan or MacDougal or on and around Bleecker Streets.)

There's a good, cheap dumpling place just below Canal on Broadway (I can never remember the name of it). Most of the places in Chinatown post menus in their windows, so I'd just go and explore and stop in wherever you like.

Don't know to much about Little Italy, I've found a great many of the restaurants there to be overpriced, I've found larger protions, better food and cheaper @ Carmine's in Times Square (W. 44th Street between 7th- 8th Avenues).

As for Chines food, I recommend the following:

Tasty Dumpling: on Mulberry Street between Mosco & Bayard Streets (about 2 blocks south of Canal Street)

&

69 Bayard Street (between Mott and Elizabeth Streets - 1 block south of Canal Street)

&

Wo Hop's (on Mott Street between Mosco Street and Bowery/Chatham Square)
