It is the strangest thing. She will be eating just fine and then she decides to take all of her chewed food and just spits it out. It has become so bad that my husband thinks I should take her to the doctor. I think it is just a phase and that there isn't a medical condition because when it is something she likes she has no trouble swallowing. Sometimes she will eat two or three cookies and then just take and chew the fourth one and then spit it out. There isn't any one thing that makes her spit, it is completely random. It makes such a mess. She is very stubborn and even though I am telling her not to do it she still does. My only concern is that she is on the light side (20 pounds) and my husband is convinced she has something wrong with her (worried loving daddy) because our other kids were quite chubby by this age. Any ideas on how to get her to swallow her food?? Thanks in advance!

My son went through the same thing and still does it occasionally. My advice is, give her smaller servings. If there's less food on the plate, there's less to cram in her mouth at once. Encourage her to spit in the trash if she needs to spit it out. (I was getting really upset that he was making a mess, so now that he at least does it in the trash, that takes away that part of it!) When she gets to the spitting stage, just take the food and put it away for then. Don't make it a "punishment." Just say, "Oh I guess you're full! Let's put this away for later!" As soon as she asks for food again, let her eat. Young toddlers really should graze on small snacks all day instead of big meals anyway.

Ahhh... the dreaded eating habits of our kids... lol
Your daughter is fine. Usually, when they spit it out, they either don't like it or they are not hungry. Sometimes just a few bites is all they need in their tummys. She will not starve herself, don't worry about that. She will eat when she's good and hungry and she will eat enough for her tummy to get full. My daughter eats in spurts. For a few days, she eats like a pig, then for the next few days, she barely eats a thing. She's always been this way and has always been small for her age. She is now 27 months and is 23 lbs. She is still wearing her summer clothes from last year! But anyway, we were concerned for a while because it seemed every time she did gain weight, she would lose it just as fast because of her eating habits. We spoke to the doctor and he suggested putting her on vitamins. This will ensure she gets the nutrients her body needs.

Her weight is fine. Don't worry too much about it. She ahs developed a habit. AT 18 months, 3 cookies is plenty, so I'm guessing that she's doing it when she's full. She puts the food in her mouth but by the time she's chewed it up, she's realized that she's full. I would only give her enough tofill her up and that's it. If she asks for more, just put a tiny more on her plate. don't give her too much that she can't finish it all. Good luck!

The meal is over when she starts spitting food out. Take her out of the high chair and clean her up. 'All done!"
Perhaps doing that consistently will stop the behavior. Don't think a doctor will help but if it makes daddy feel better it won't hurt.

Well it is not a good habit for most of us because it can cause weight gain because like the first commenter said, night time is when our bodies are shutting down and it doesn't want to digest anything that we consume so it will store it as fat. However if it is not affecting your weight then go ahead and do it if it makes you happy. Best of luck!

It sounds like she has too much in her mouth. Give her small amounts at a time and allow her to chew and swallow her food before giving her more. Maybe even give her a drink of water after each bite.

my two year old use to do it and she is very lean also (25lbs), I took her to the doctor, he told me not to feed her, she will eat when she hungry. Strange for a Dr to say that, and I felt bad, but after a half a day of not eatting, she ate everything that was on her plate, and more. The doctor said her weight was great, and she is very healthy.

She is either just having fun or she is getting new teeth. You should take her to a doctor in case it is serious.
