My parents don't want to let me get my motorcycle permit because of the insurance. However ... if I got the permit, I would not be buying a bike, I would be riding someone elses ... occassionally. It's basically just to learn to ride until I turn 18. So ... would I have to pay insurance with just a permit, even if I didn't have a bike? (BTW, the bike I would be riding is insured, and I already have my drivers license)

Having a license endorsement does not increase your insurance rates. For example, I have an AM-CDL with haz mat and passenger endorsements. The AM means that I can drive tractor trailers and anything smaller including motorcycles. The Haz Mat and passenger endorsements mean I can carry hazardous materials, and also can drive buses.

My auto insurance rates are not affected by my license rating. My driving record will make a difference. If I were to have points, accidents and tickets, My rates would rise!

The real fact here is your parents do not want you to get a motorcycle permit. You are under 18. No matter what their reasons are, if they say no, you have to wait!!

Think about it. Insurance is proof of financal responsibility. SInce you don't own a bike you don't have to have insurance. Be careful riding someone elses bike though. Not a lot of insurance agencies cover 3rd party drivers (you). So if you wreck it you more than likely be held liable for the cycle and whatever else is involved, if its your fault. I know you want to get comfortable with riding but be very careful and practice on side roads and parking lots with no traffic. Because the longer you have your motorcycle license the cheaper your insurance will be.

Hey Brad, in the state i live in you can ride your own bike with a permit if as long as your riding with another biker that has a license and is over 21. Now to ride someone elses bike to learn? again i beleive that you could as long as you ride with another biker with a motorcycle license and is over 21 (but)!! there insurance would have to cover you riding with a permit. check out the (dmv),s website in your state. I,m sure you would be covered as long as the person has a full coverage insurance plan. If not you might need to pay a little extra or..your freind would to obtain it. Your buddy would have to check with their insurance co. Bike insurance is reasonably cheap in illinois, it costs me $168.00 a year so your expense in any surcumstance should be minimal to none. To answer your question>> NO just because you have a permit does,nt mean you have to pay bike insurance. Besides it would,nt be titled in your name anyway. Insurance is an owners responsability not a driver,s, they are required to make sure there is adaquate insurance coverage for you....hope this helps.

For motorcycles, insurance is needed. in view which you have had an coincidence previously, it will probable value you somewhat extra. even nonetheless, bike insurance is extra much less costly than motor vehicle insurance. go searching at various motor vehicle insurance companies and that they'd provide you a concept of what it will value.

The best person to call is your parents insurance agent. It may vary from state to state but I really doubt that they would require you to carry insurance on something you don't own just because you have a license.

Yes, you would need "operator insurance" that insures you when driving a vehicle that does not belong to you. This applies to motorcycles as well as cars. Unless your friend's policy is an owner/operator policy (unlikely) you would need to have it.
