If you like the "bully" terrriers, and would like one in a smaller version, maybe you should look into the Boston Terrier.

smaller dogs usually bark a lot...
so you need to think about what you are looking for... and be more realistic...
dogs that are playful may not be calm when you "need it to"
How much the dog barks can be changed IF YOU LEARN HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DOG WELL.
As a kid I always had terriers and loved them.
I had a fox terrier and a welsh terrier, and I think I'd have liked the Schnauzer as well. My favorite was the welsh terrier.
What would really work well is if you get a rescue dog and make it a loving home.

It sounds like you may be happy with a spaniel. They are easily trained and very loving. Mine rarely barks unless he needs to go out or there is someone outside. They are very playful and calm down very quickly if you give them enough exercise. We exercise ours by taking 2 long walks about 1/2 mile each and thowing his ball in the house. We ave an English Cocker and he is about 18inches at the shoulder and weighs about 30 pounds.
You also have to remember that each dog has it's own personality don't just pick the cutest one, pick one that is not shy and clicks with your personality.

There is going to be work put in no matter what breed. Some of the terrier breeds are more hyper and harder to train than others so do a little homework before making a final decision.

Go to a shelter and tell them this and they may have an individual dog that has these characteristics.
I have a liking for whippets, who are generally quiet and playfull, while also being lazy. (ie: wear it out and it'll calm down)

Yorkshire Terriers are adorable and pretty fun if you want a small dog. They aren't breeded for hunting so they tend not to bark alot.

You asking for an impossible dog. You'd be better off with a stuffed animal. But I think I would reccomend a spaniel. Let us know how it turns out!

go to akc.org and read the descriptions of each dog. Be sure you buy from a reputable breeder NOT a puppy mill. The cost will not be much more OR you could adopt from a pound and/or rescue. People there will make sure your needs match your dog.
