I answered this same question awhile ago..
some of my faves are:
Central Park in the summer - go watch the roller disco people, hang out on the Great Lawn, etc...
Central Park Zoo! Gus, the polar bear swims and is fun to watch. there is also a kiddy zoo to feed the goats.
it used to be fun to go to the Plaza for tea in the afternnon but it is all condos now - tea at the Waldorf or the St Regis is fun.
The Flea Market in Hells kitchen on weekends is sometimes fun. (not as good as the Chelsea one used to be)
the Chelsea art galleries
SoHo for shopping, also Ladies Mile of Fifth Ave.
Bergdorf Goodman windows at any time of year but especially Christmas
The West Village & Meatpacking district have the best places to eat and the nicest "quaint" cobble stones streets and little shops.
Empite State building is worth the trip to the top if you have never been.
Tompkins Square Park and surrounding neighborhood - very east village -very bohemian.
Upper East Side- Madison Ave shopping- the upper class- ladies who lunch, (especially after hanging out in East Village this will seem so different!)
Katz' deli for the best pastrami sandwiches and Meg Ryan's famous scene from Harry met Sally
Statue of Liberty is bound to bring some patriotic feelings that you never knew you had!
MoMA and the Met. both fantastic museums so is the Whitney and the Guggenheim. MoMA has an amzing RIchard Serra show on now.
Grand Central Station is wonderful to see and has a good Oyster Bar
If you can get tickets to see Saturday Night Live it is fun.
Grammercy Park neighborhood is nice (but you can't get into the park it is for residents only.)
Grammercy Park Hotel for a swanky, hip drink at its bar.
Union Square for some good protest speeches and a great farmers market.
Washington Square Park for lots of street performers and the gelato cart!
Ground Zero for a somber moment.
Walking acroos Brooklyn Bridge- there is a great ice cream shop at the Brooklyn side called "Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory"
tons more to see- best advice - discover your own New York and secret places - bring great walking shoes and be observant!
People watching is fantastic anywhere in New York. you may even see a celebrity or two.

ground zero, the empire state building, times square, rockefeller plaza, Broadway (take in a play), eat at a NY deli, get a slice (NY style pizza, the best). Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island.
If cash is not a problem, go to the heliport and take a helicopter tour of the city. Truly amazing, they have to fly over the river, but the pilot points out the sites.

I agree that it fairly is great to look at a map and plan out your day. pass away an excellent sort of time to discover efficient Park. the only element i might upload is to establish you funds the two time and money to eat out! area of the NYC adventure is enjoying the selection of delicacies available! maximum guidebooks would be effective with finding stable eating places. One suggestion for a popular time focused visitor is Katz's Deli.

In addition to the other posters, Central Park is worth checking out. NY style pizza is way overrated in my opinion
