It's the irritation of dry eyes. To help, try putting a couple of drops of artificial tears or get lubricating ointment to put in just before you go to bed. I also use my artificial tears upon awakening...and that helps with the irritation also.

Real sand or the feeling of sand? Eyes can be quite dry when you wake up because your tear ducts aren't working much when your eye are closed. This can cause a feeling of sand in your eyes. You can buy some eyedrops if it is bothersome to you.

It's possibly the salt buildup from tears that evaporated during the night. Why does it look like sand? Well, no one ever told you your eyes were that clean.
