Yes, it is true that many people are bulimic at a young age, but older people may acquire the disease, too. Ex. Karen Carpenter. Many bulimics choose too eat excessive amounts of food and then vomit to create the feeling of being full, yet without gaining weight. I personally believe that this method is based off of the Roman Empire's vomitorium, except in bulimics' case, they don't do it so they can eat more. Some bulimics actually eat little portions and force themselves to vomit several times a day so it doesn't look like they are in fact bulimics. For more information, I suggest looking up the topic on a website such as http://www.google.com and getting the experts' opinions. Good luck on that essay!

1. binge (eat thousands of calories at a time) and purge (throw up)
2. exercise excessively (called exercise bulimia)
3. Using laxatives to 'rid' the body of the food.
4. using water pills
5. using enemas
6. extreme fasting after a binge
7. using diuretics
umm...that's all I can think of. Good luck on your essay!

I was bulimic at age 19. I'd force myself to throw up (finger down throat) after every meal. Unfortunately what I didn't know at the time is that my gag reflexes would be messed up for life. I'm in my mid 30's now, and to this day, if I cough, I have to be careful or I may throw up. After so many times of making myself sick, it reached a point where all I had to do was go into the bathroom after eating, lean over the toilet and boom, I'd be sick, no finger down the throat needed... its a scary disease, partly because its so easy to do, no pills required, no starving ones self required. And it took years for me to be able to eat without the urge to vomit. I was one of the lucky ones who finally saw it for what it was and stopped doing it but too many dont recognize it for what it is/what its doing...
