I got this dude's e-mail address from a question on here. He says he gives out personal loans to people $4000-$100,000. He asked for a copy of my ID. He is overseas. Is this a scam? What ways can I be scammed by this? I haven't sent anything yet.

Good for you. Don't send anything. Most of these folks are running advance loan scams. They start getting your personal info and then ask you for money upfront before they distribute the loan proceeds. If you are a US citizen, these are illegal transactions. The upfront payment may be called many things-collateral, insurance, capital tax. It is a fraud.

As long as you haven't send anything, you are OK. But of course, if they receive any personal infor, there is identify theft, etc. as well as money loss. So beware my friend and check the Crimes of Persuasion website for more information.

These supposed loaners are everywhere on here. Of course its a scam. Think about it. Overseas, offering any kind of money you want. Next he will ask for money up front and then run.

Good thing you asked before you sent anything. You were about to become a victim of identity theft. NEVER deal with anyone in this manner who is not covered under the laws of the nation/state in which you live.

What will you do legally once your identity has been stolen by someone in Nigeria or similar ?

They ARE trying to scam you. They can use your personal information to create "legal" documents for illegal immigrants, obtain loans and purchase things on credit in YOUR name, and perhaps some perv will come visit you personally. NEVER give your information to ANYONE you don't know or who has contacted you without your invitation.

Dude rule of thumb "don't talk to strangers, let alone give them your ID". Identity theft is quite rampant nowadays. You're better off going to your neighborhood bank for a loan.
