Support him. Be his friend. Do what you are doing. Tell him that is ok to be who you are. Be a good friend like you are and tell him stuttering does not make him stupid. He was born with it. It does not have to control his life.

he can still go to a speech therapist if he wants help. there are tricks to learn how to not stutter. other people make a big deal of it. he's probably been teased his whole life about stuttering and feels badly about it. just be supportive like you have been and let him know that you like him no matter how he talks. (people who stutter can sing or recite memorized lines without stuttering at all.)

I'm betting that your friend has already seen someone about this and it's being dealt with on his end with a speech threapist. If not, you could suggest it but really all you need to do is kick it with him, don't rush him to talk, DONT finish his sentences even though you know what he's going to say and think you can "spare him" and "do it for him" and don't let others mess with him about it when you are around. The bigger a deal is made about it the harder it is for his brain to think about what he needs to say. Good luck and you sound like a great buddy.

Tell him to check out www.stutteringhelp.org. Several of my uncles and cousins got help by using their book "Self Therapy for the Stutterer" and one went to a speech therapist who specialized in treating stuttering that he found through the Foundation's referrals. If you slow the rate of your own speech down when you are talking with him, it will help.

He wants to be able to speak just like everyone else does. It is frustrating when you can't say what you want to say. Go with Bud's advice!
