"Four Italian management consultants have come up with a novel way to get ahead in business - read fewer textbooks and watch more films. ...all good films teach lessons about behaviour. ...High-quality films, though, can offer lessons about problem-solving and teamwork as well as focusing on issues such as globalisation and diversity" UNQUOTE above article.

What movies would you recommend to your MilitaryBoss to watch and learn from?

Do you believe in the CONCEPT of certain movies as being viable for the job you do there today.. if not the end result?.. if so, which film CONCEPT works for you in your mind, yet won't be tried and tested in real life?

Re Taraogli - I salute your service record - "14yrs of MOSTLY active service HM Sp Forces"

However, did you actually read the article I gave the link to?
The MoD is just another "corporate business" when all is said and done.. books to balance, numbers in the right columns to add up at the end of each month...

So what is SO different about the military HEIRARCHY than say that of BT.. BP.. Shell... Virgin... who also have THOUSANDS of employees to manage?

For SURE, THE ACTUAL job description of said employees is vastly different, BUT, my question WAS NOT ABOUT THE EMPLOYEES... BUT ABOUT THE BOSSES... the ones who deploy them to "hot spots"...

Ah,maybe YOU are such a person...?

Hmmm... ok I can understand why you "can't believe" such a question.. and worse still "can't believe" the answerers... truth hurts?

Try READING my question first, digesting its contents, and cogitate over your response before letting your gut instinct get the better of your sensibilities.

I can hardly believe the question and I just CAN'T believe the answerers who are agreeing with this nut case. What sort of 'Micky Mouse' forces would we have if our Military Leaders used material, scripts and books, written by some 'Joe Bloggs', who's 'hero' ALWAYS wins etc. to "improve their skills"? What a load of effing shite! Get back to your comics and fantasy world you lot, where you belong!! (And I couldn't give a fishes tit, if you all gave me 10 'thumbs down' each!!). My god, what's the world coming to???????????

Edit

Apologies for my outburst. I'm usually more tollerant of harmless ignorance (no offence meant). It wasn't from "gut instinct", nor "lack of cogitation", it was your attempt to compare the Military, with it's massive variety of functions, from defence and intelligence, to tactics and logistics, etc etc etc, with passive, civilian businesses. Balancing books and putting numbers in right colums is a necessary but tiny part of it, and books and films ARE used to improve skills, but it is specialised, often "top secret" and definately ALL classified material, not the "Gung-Ho" type you are suggesting, that could turn our Services into a laughing stock. It might work for the big businesses, silly mistakes casued by the author's vivid, fantasizing imagination, would only cost the company money. In the Military, lives are at stake and the Country's security could become weakened, should the "Military Bosses" as you call them, consider your suggestion.
(By the way, I "Dared" many times during my 14 years, though we usually left that to our Army 'chums'. We worked more by guile than strength, to win our battles).

Twelve O'Clock High - A great study of military management skills in stressful situations. We watched this movie in Leadership Management Educational Training in the Navy back in the early 80's

saviour
the longest day
and
love honour and obey with a bit of fight club for good measure

these films would show the strenght of soldiers under intense pressure from the government but also the media, oh and one i forgot, the mark of caine.

Not sure if this is the answer you are looking for but I think Military bosses and also the government should watch programs like the apprentice it might teach them about budgets and not cutting it to much leaving the men and women in the military struggling with a lack of man power and lack of equipment.

Startegic Air Command and 12 O'Clock High are some of the best leadership movies I have ever seen. I urged all my troops to take these in and help them understand that we do what needs to be done- sometimes at great personal cost. But we do it anyway.

Flying Leathernecks is good too.

Arny in "Commando"
We could give all the guns, bombs and ammunition to GWB, and send him over to Iraq.
I"m sure his mate Arnold could tell him how he manages to kill hundreds of his enemies without getting a scratch.
Then we could bring the troops home and let GW have a free range.
