I have a 3year old neutered male, Oliver, and we recently got a female kitten, Penny. At first we thought he wanted to kill her, but turned out he got used to her and they play together. He plays a bit rough, holding her down and biting her, but sometimes he is also tender, licking her or letting her chase him and vice versa. He lets her eat from his food, but she is sometimes getting on his nerves so most of the time he hits and bites her (not injuring her though). Now we are leaving for a few days, so Penny is in a cattery. Oliver is back to his old self, calm, purring at us, which had stopped while Penny was here (he only played rough with her, he didn't care about us or cuddled up with me as he used to). The question is, is he happier with penny around or not? Does he prefer to have a play-mate or does he prefer to be calm alone with "mummy" (me), that he really loves?

I agree with the first poster. Young Oliver seems to be responding to the environment in which he is exposed to. When Penny is around he plays the role of alpha male and female for that matter teaching her what she needs to know and also putting her in her place when she crosses the line.(FEline that is..he he) But when little Penny is nowhere to be seen, Oliver reverts back to playing the role of subservient with you as the alpha female. Wanting your affections and so on...Seems like you have a happy little family with no worries or at least none that are problematic.

Enjoy your cat life.

Hi,
I am sure he probably does love her. I have 2 cats both female, but my older cat acts the same towards the kitten I got, they have been together now for 8 yrs and they love each other, they still play alot and at times you would think they hate each other, but I call it sibling rivalry, plus it seems to me that Oliver is just making sure Penny knows that he is the top cat in the house, they all need to establish the so called pecking order of the home! Hope this helps and good luck!

I'm sure he's happier with his kitty companion; just because he's turned to you for affection when it's not there, doesnt mean he's happier, it means he's missing the kitty. It generally takes quite sometime for an adult cat to accept a new kitten, and it sounds like yours was a fairly quick acceptance. Our old cat died recently, and our young cat is missing him dreadfully, so we will be getting her a companion soon.

I wish I was a cat. It sounds like he has a great life. The cats seem like brother and sister fussing and fighting a bit but sweet to each other sometimes.
