By statistics, Australian Football (or known as AFL here) is the most popular sport in Australia. But when you go state by state, it is a different story.
These are approx estimates of the % of sports followed the most by people in each state
Queensland- Rugby League-45%, AFL-40%, Rugby Union-5%, Soccer-5%, Cricket-5%
NSW-Rugby League-75%, Rugby Union-10%, AFL-10%, Soccer-5%
Victoria- AFL-90%, Rugby League-5%, Rugby Union-5%, Soccer-15%, Cricket 5% (Victoria can have 120% as they have a lot of non Australian citizens in Victoria like Greeks and Italians ect. and also has the most sports avaliable in Victoria)
South Australia- AFL 90%, Soccer-8%, Cricket- 2%
Western Australia Same as South Australia
Northern Terretory- AFL, 95%, Cricket-5%
ACT (same as NSW)
Tasmania- AFL-90%, Cricket 10%
It is very complicated. My answer for state-by-state is only an estamate but AFL is the most popular sport in Australia by statistcics

the only truly national sport is cricket, there is a state side for each state (the nt excepted as it is a territory) so does that it most loved ?
afl and rugby league have by far the largest commercial audience, however depending on the state as to which is more popular.
If i had to be forced into an answer i would say marginally afl over rugby league.
just as a sub note I would be very surprised if percentage guy has it correct, certainly i cant believe cricket would be 5% in queensland- hell it is the only sport on tv in summer the fact that kerry packer bought the rights to it would suggest it has a better than 5% audience share of the sports market.

The sports with the most participants are netball, golf and fishing. Of the football codes, Australian football and soccer have the most participants with rugby union next and then league. The football code with the greatest following is Australian football which attracts more spectators than all the other codes combined. More people watch Australian football than watch cricket although cricket has a very strong following. (AFL, the Australian Football League, is one of many competitions in Australian football.)
On the first Tuesday in November, the only sport of interest is horse racing with the running of the Melbourne Cup. Every four years the USA celebrates the Melbourne Cup by electing the President on the same day.

Oh my God. I can't believe that hardly anyone said FOOTBALL! That is our most popular sport! I personally HATE all sport but footy is right up there. Cricket is the most popular summer sport though...footy is played in winter. Strange really as the footballers wear tiny little shorts and its cold and rainy some of the time they are playing and cricketers wear full length long pants etc when playing in summer! Must be HOT HOT HOT for them in the baking sun in full length pants and shirts ...saves them from skin cancer though I guess.
The only sport I like is surfing and I only like that if I am at the beach watching it. My husband is a great surfer...winning all our local competitions...but I hate it when he watches surfing all day on telly!

This really depends on what part of Australia you are from! I'm originally from Victoria and everyone is football mad (AFL), I'd never heard of any rugby teams until I moved to Canberra as this is what they seem to follow here. Although, if it were the olympics, I'd say swimming.

Depends what part of Australia....
Cricket all over, rugby in NSW, AFL in Victoria, soccer in some multicultural parts. Tennis also is popular.

I think more people play netball than anything else.
Football codes are fragmented between 3 majors.
Cricket is a universal obsession inn summer, but only at international level. The domestic comp is practically ignored.
