Usually, they just bunch us all together into one category, such as "non-religious", and say there are a billion of us. I think it would be safe to say that about 2% of the world's population, or somewhere between 160,000,000 to 200,000,000 people are atheist.
One of the things that muddies it, is atheism isn't a belief. You can be an atheist, and be a buddhist. You can be an atheist, and be a secular humanist. So it is hard to say if one person counts for two entries, or if they take the belief over the non-belief when compiling.

Approx 20% of the total population Worldwide is Atheist - there is a subtle difference between a non-believer and an Atheist. Like in some places many people will say they are non believers but only some percent will say they are Atheist.
The top ten countries number wise are:
China 8 - 14% - Totaling : 103,907,840 - 181,838,720
Japan 64 - 65% - Totaling : 81,493,120 - 82,766,450
Russia 24 - 48% - Totaling : 34,507,680 - 69,015,360
Vietnam 81% - Totaling : 66,978,900
Germany 41 - 49% - Totaling : 33,794,250 - 40,388,250
France 43 - 54% - Totaling : 25,982,320 - 32,628,960
USA 3 - 9% - Totaling : 8,790,840 - 26,822,520
Britain 31 - 44% - Totaling : 18,684,010 - 26,519,240
South Korea 30 - 52% - Totaling : 14,579,400 - 25,270,960

I recently (last couple of months) saw a link to the CIA Guidebook site posted here. This contained statistics on world religions populations etc. I wish i had saved the link, but oh well.
From what I remember about 33% of the world is christian, mostly chatholic, and I think less than 10% are atheist.
Something for Christians to ponder deep and hard, 4 BILLION people alive today are going to be condemded to hell... if it exists.

The significance of such a search is simply without substance. Successfully surveying an "Atheist" to not be a part of another non-religious group has a superb chance of one in a googol, especially when your foolishness has arbitrated minor description of characteristic to be under the criterion for "nonreligious groups".
For one, atheism isn't even strictly nonreligious. Some Buddhists are ascribed atheists.

More than you think. The numbers mean nothing. Most people check"Christian"by default.Very few of those people really believe in the invisible man.It is simply reflex to say "christian"If America were TRUELY 80% Christian as suggested by statistics, then, near as I can figure,EVERY Sunday,240 MILLION people would attend Christian churches at least every Sunday. This is FAR from the case.Because Christians so relentlessly try to oppress ANY belief other than their own, many state they are "Christian" just to keep the evangelical"hounds from hell"off their backs. The numbers are a very revealing glimpse into exactly who is the "persecutor"and who is the "persecuted"80% Christian is a damning statement on what is supposed to be a religion of love and tolerance

Its very hard to know hwat you mean by atheist. An agnostic does not believe in god but would admit to the possibility of one - but then so would many atheists. A humanist is almost certain to be an atheist. Etc.
And its hard to know what you mean by theist. While somewhat over half of people in the UK say "yes" if asked "do you believe in god", when asked whether they believe in the aspects of the creeds of major religions (jesus son of god etc) they mostly say no. In fact, less than 2% are actively religious and pursue their belief in any way. Around as many say they believe in horoscopes.
So I would have to say for teh UK that about 50% of the population have no meaningful belief in god, and around anoputh 30% have a belief in some god but no particular god.

It is not a belief neither a religion why you're counting heads? To kill?
Why not counting subgroups?
Everybody can be classified based on choices.
Most atheists believe something else than God.
I myself is a Skeptic Atheist, which is the strongest one. Never believe anything...

hard to say as atheists usually get lumped in with the agnostics and whatnot.
Adherents estimates the nonreligious at 16% globally.

But if 'god' knows everything and answers prayers, wouldn't it be easier to ask him/her/it to do a quick headcount?
