I hear this all the time and I think that humanity has put this thought into itself from mythological religious programming. Tell me if I am right.

I was never taught that I "deserve nothing". The Bible teaches that God doesn't owe us, his creatures anything, but it doesn't teach that no one ever deserves anything.

1 Timothy 5:18 For the Scripture says, "You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain," and, "The laborer deserves his wages."

Romans 13:7 Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.

Its easier to accept having nothing if you think you deserve nothing.
I think its interesting that the language used in the bible reflects a lot of feudal ideology. That lords are somehow deserving of their positions and have god-given rights of rule over the masses. Obedience is a requirement.
What better way to keep the serfs in line than to make them believe thats the way god means them to be.
