Cats are funny sometimes, if there have been any changes with the litter box ie. new brand of litter, the box has been moved, etc, often the cat will have to be retrained. I moved the litter box from the basement to the first floor of my house and I had to spend three days retraining my 3 year old cats.
But, if there have been no changes to the litter box, you may want to have your vet check out the cat, to make sure they don't have any medical conditions. Urinary tract infections are very common and will cause the cat to pee anywhere mainly because it hurts them too much if they have to wait too long, as in run to the litter box first.
Best of luck!

Some cats don't like things to change, moving the his/her litter box may have some aspect as to why they've stopped. Or the litter itself may have an impact on it.
If your cat has refused to go at all, take it to a vet, it may have a bladder infection or some other illness that you may not know of.
When I had my cat, he used to not use his litter box. We had to start watching him and placing him in his litterbox when he showed any signs of using the bathroom on the carpet. Maybe try that.
Hope all ends well, good luck!

Check for urinary tract infection or bladder crystals. this is typical behaviour. Go to the vet to have a urine analysis. It can be serious, because he can block if you don't pay attention. It is nothing if it is treated soon, but it can be deadly if neglected. Check that he urinates properly, if he strains but doesn't urinate there is a problem. Also, start feeding him wet food (Urinary formula of a good brand, like Hill's c/d for example) and add some extra water in it. The more dilute the urine is the better. But he may also need medication, so don't skip the vet visit.

When a cat that age suddenly becomes shy of the litter box, and he has no access to the outdoors, then I would immediately suspect urinary issues like UTI. See a vet as soon as possible.
