I am doing a video for a project at college, I want to do a stop motion film. I'm told professional stop motion films at 24fps.

I cant be arsed to do that many shots! Whats the minimum frames per second I can do?

I want it to look something like this:

Really in my experience 15fps is as low as you can go and still get ok looking video. You can sometimes get away with 10, bur it gets very jerky. However every second of video is never perfect. When I edit it I first take a free program to join the pictures for a specific scene together. Then I bring it into final cut and some parts have to be slowed down or speed up. Really around 15-20fps is fine. I know it takes a lot more time, but it pays off in the end. Really, the most important part is to not move the camera or any of the things that aren't supposed to be move. If your camera has a remote, I would recommend using it. Otherwise you can get a slight movement from when you hit the shutter button. Good luck.

motion pictures are projected at 24 fps

hand drawn feature animation is normally "double shot" that is each cell normally exposed twice in succession. the motion is not as smooth as full live action, but you can get the 24 fps with half the work. sometimes when the action is minimal, triple or quad shots are done.

so the secret is to shoot each set up several times even if there is suppossed to be continuous motion between set ups. check it out, double shot 24fps will look a whole lot better than 12 fps continuous motion.

Basically the less fps you do, the jerkier it will be. You could get away with about 20 though.
